Red Sonja in development hell...

Now, I know Red Sonja is hardly Shakespeare, but I was looking forward to a remake of this film. It has potential, and could be a great little exploitation flick, with sex and violence, if done right.

Earlier they had cast Rose McGowan, who I thought was inspired casting for the role. She's kinda' hot, can pull off tough as hell, and is willing to be naked. But now, with the shake up, she's gone. And who are they thinking of hiring?

She doesn't want to be Wonder Woman but is willing to consider Red Sonja!

Either my respect for her just tripled or I am laughing at how the mighty have fallen after Jennifer's Body.
 
She can act, she can kick ass, she has the body for it.

Only two things need answering. Will she get naked, or at least topless? And can she look good as a redhead?

No to either, no sale.
 
I haven't seen any proof that she can act. And I disagree she has the body for it. She's a waif, she looks like you could snap her like a twig.
 
She'll work out, and she's got at least as big a bust as Rose McGowan has.

And I've seen Jennifer's Body and both T-Formers films. I've also seen Charmed.

I really don't see how McGowan outclasses her as a thespian.

I was fine with McGowan, I'm fine with Fox.
 
McGowan, of course, is going to be in the Conan movie; both Sonja and Conan wer created by Robert E Howard. Although the previous Conan, Arnie, appeared in the last Sonja movie, playing Conan in all but name, McGowan's linking with this project seemed to take her out of the Sonja picture.

My main problem with Fox is that she seems a totally 21st century woman. You don't need to be Meryl Streep to play this role, it doesn't call for great action chops. But it's hard not to see Fox as an All-American 21st century (valley) girl. I'm just about going to be able to accept her - if at all - in Jonah Hex. But as a warrior babe like Sonja? Hmmmm, not so much.
 
This movie should be in development hell... maybe they can work on... oh I don't know, something original based in the same genera. :eek:

Personally I feel Red Sonja is a better role to have on screen than Wonder Woman.

Well, they already cast someone who couldn't act last time. Plus, Carano isn't all that tall - only 5'8".

That's the problem with characters like this. Same with the likes of Wonder Woman and She-Hulk too. You need to cast someone who both looks the part and can act.
 
5'8" isn't that bad to work around if you use camera angles and have the men she's fighting not be giants. Plus you can have her in boots or whatever to increase the height. There's plenty of ways to shoot things like that. Hell I've watched enough Japanese movies/dramas where they manage to play off actors shorter than that as tall.
 
^Still, she's not quite the 6' Bridgitte Nielsen, is she ?

This movie is going to look daft if it comes down with a case of Joss Whedon Syndrome.

True, but Red Sonja has never been depicted as a giant. Certainly not a towering muscled yet curvy giant like She Hulk (who, IMO, is best done with CGI) or even just tall and athletic, like WW.

She's tall, but not unusually so (and we can get around a somewhat short actress for this), athletic and curvy. As long as she is a redhead or can dye convincingly and has rounded curves (small, flat chested RS, no way) and can competently act and more than competently carry action scenes, she'll be fine.

Put it this way, most of Carano's lines from C&C: Red Alert 3 (a videogame with intentionally cheesy cutscenes) were cut and the Natasha unit in the actual game was voiced by a different actress.

As I said, "competently act".
 
Absolutely, which again reemphasises the need for not skimping on the bust (preferably natural, silicon non-jiggle takes me right out of the Hyborean Age).

I have mixed feelings about nudity. Personally, I want it.

But I think Red Sonja should get lots of boys checking her out too. Swords and Sorcery is cool.

So maybe nudity only in the Director's cut on the DVD version?
