Recommend a good horror movie

I'm looking for a good horror movie to watch with my fiancee tonight. I'd prefer a classic, but I am willing to consider newer films as well. Not really a huge fan of "slasher" movies, but if it is truly suspenseful and well plotted, I might go for it.

I don't have time to list the ones I've already seen, so I apologize in advance for any suggestions I reject with "Seen it!" :bolian:

I prefer older, classic horror films too. Here's a list of films I recommend.

Note: some of these movies have remakes. I am not recommending those.

"The Haunting" - obviously a classic, the best "haunted house" movie ever IMO
"Village of the Damned" - one of my favorites, great scifi-flavored horror
"Kwaidan" - a Japanese anthology of ghost stories, all of which are excellent
"The Wolf Man" - My favorite of the Universal classics
"Kiss of the Vampire" - of the famous Hammer studios, my favorite of their horror line
"Carnival of Souls" - a very low-key movie, atmospheric and spooky
"Fall of the House of Usher" - I like the Roger Corman/Edgar Allen Poe/Vincent Price films from the '60s, and this one is the best
"Ghost Cat Mansion" - this one, admittedly, isn't going to be easy to find, but I love it so much I had to mention it. A great ghostly revenge story set in pre-modern Japan.
"Salem’s Lot" - Stephen King apparently hates this television adaptation of his famous novel, but I thought it was especially well done
"1408" - I wanted to list at least one recent film, and I did like this one a lot.

Well, you can't go wrong with The Shining.

For something Goofy I suggest Re-animator. I just saw it yesterday and it's really fun. zombie genre meets 1930's Mad scientists movies.

I'm likely watching Conan The Barbarian tonight, so I'm not really following tradition.

If you want to go for something a little different, try Jacob's Ladder or The Serpent and the Rainbow.
A guilty pleasure for me is Event Horizon. This throws some sci-fi sauce on the hell and damnation genre. It's not a great movie, but there's just something about it I like.
You just can't beat the classic atmosphere of the old Universal monster flicks - take your pick - Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein.
How about the original Night of the Living Dead? Or the original Halloween?
Want a few laughs thrown in? Try Return of the Living Dead or Re-Animator. You get a bonus with Re-Animator - Weyoun is in it!

The Fearless Vampire Killers, bit more light hearted than the more serious Hammer series, draws more from Carmilla than Dracula.

The 1931 version of Dracula, maybe going back a bit too far for your tastes?

You can never go wrong with the classics. :techman:

I'm reluctant to recommend things like Dracula, Vampyr and Nosferatu for those who aren't used to black and white or silent movies.

Hammer Horror is always a good place for random and numerous monster/horror movies in the 60's camp, rubber suit and fake fangs way. :D
