This is great news: an artificial alcohol with none of the downsides of the real thing!

No addiction or mood swings:

But unlike alcohol its does not affect other parts of the brain that control mood swings and lead to addiction. It is also much easier to flush out of the body.

And if you need to drive home, just take the antidote and you're fit to drive:

Finally because it is much more focused in its effects, it can also be switched off with an antidote, leaving the drinker immediately sober.

Ain't modern science grand?

Bah. I'm an old school drinker!

I've always had kind of a puritanical attitude toward the use of recreational drugs and intoxicants. I've disapproved of what I saw as reliance on a chemical crutch to attain relaxation or pleasure when there are healthier ways to do so. But lately I've come to realize that, although I personally choose to eschew such things, it's a pretty universal drive to seek "highs," not just in humans but in animals as well. And nothing's going to change that. So I've realized the priority should be finding ways to satisfy that drive in a safe way -- one that doesn't addict people, doesn't poison them or damage them physically, doesn't impair their judgment and make them dangerous to themselves and others. So this is a step in the right direction.

I drink beer, ale, lager, ports, stout, etc. The most I will drink at one sitting is three, although on a hot summer afternoon I'll go through more, albeit at a slower pace. Several hangovers during my youth taught me not to drink into excess. There are also many scientific studies that tout the benefits of wine and beer, but I think the big problem is that people want to apply a one-size-fits-all to what you call poison. I know a guy who is close to 40, has been smoking since he was 15, and his doctor is dumbfounded that his lungs are clear with no loss of function.

Basically, everyone is different and affected differently. The amount I drink could probably kill or severely affect someone else, while it would be considered a mere pittance by yet another person's standards.

anything can be abused.
A DUI would still be applicable.

Only if you fail to take the pill that would neutralize the effects and restore normal function. And it sounds like the effect wouldn't go beyond mild inebriation in any case, so judgment and coordination might not be as impaired.

Besides, heck, we'll probably have self-driving cars within ten years anyway. People do so many other things that impair their driving -- phone calls, texting, just generally getting too little sleep -- and that's unlikely to change in our current society. So the safest path at this point is to take the driver out of the equation as much as possible -- either have the car drive itself or at least give it the ability to override the driver when necessary to avoid collisions.
