Real Life Superheroes?

We have at least 3 in the UK alone! The Dark Spartan did at least seem to have thought it out a bit, wearing kevlar and carrying a shield but some of the others were totally vulnerable without even a basic knowledge of self defence! I think anybody wearing primary coloured spandex probably hasn't thought it through very well. One guy just worked in a comic shop. I mean when the riots kick off, who would you want to hide behind - the guy with the black armour and shield or the skinny guy in purple and yellow?

I had to google The Dark Spartan, as I'd actually never heard of him, and the Telegraph article that came up had me in tears of laughter. The article is in relation to a documentary about real life superheroes that aired earlier this month...

He [The Black Void, Dark Spartan's sidekick] admits to suffering from irritable bowel syndrome which can become inflamed at times of stress if the situation gets "a little tasty".

The documentary also features nerdy 17-year-old crime fighter Kieran, aka "Noir", from Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees, who is plagued with panic attacks and nerves.

An Ex-soldier, called Ken, 33, from Yeovil, Somerset, is also seen using smoke bombs and ambushing troublemakers by hiding in bushes.

But despite months of patrolling their local seaside resorts, the pair – in real life a financial adviser and a shop worker – have failed to find any trouble at all.

Sounds like a British version of The Specials.

I know! It was an awesome documentary. Only the wives and mothers came out of it with any dignity. :bolian: Dark Spartan was my favourite though. He, at least, seemed to have a bit of common sense (comparatively speaking).

I totally missed that documentary. I don't watch much TV anymore so I didn't even know it was on. I'll have to see if I can find it floating around the net anywhere.

Wow I always thought it was a US phenomenon.

I read the follow up interview with the director and he said most of the superheroes he talked to had martial arts training. Many had EMT training. A few it seems use non-lethal weapons and armor.

I've heard of people acting like superheroes in connection with some sort of low-key public reform. That's okay, because it is done with some sort of acknowledgment that it is just pretend.

People who go out and fight actual criminals are fucking stupid.

The guy who claimed he had super speed and healing abilities probably needs to be committed if said in seriousness.

It depends on what you call fighting crime. At most these people are no different than the neighborhood watch except they do it in cosplay. The New York Initiative scares me because they take it one step too far. Trying to bait criminals is dangerous.

I watched the documentary about the UK "superheroes", and my god it's hilarious. Can't believe that kid had a panic attack about talking to the public in his mask.

At least "The Shadow" was a former soldier and had some form of training, but even he was pretty laughable. The bit where he jumped out of the bush, ran up to that parked car and just shouted at the occupants before running off had me in hysterics.

.

Do you know where we Americans can see the British version? Is it out on DVD.

Doubtful mate, it's only a 25-minute documentary, so it won't see a DVD release unless they release the whole First Cuts series together. It only aired on Channel 4 over here on August 3rd, so it's probably still viewable on their catch-up service 4OD, might need a proxy server to get past area restrictions, though. I got it through other means, but board rules prevent me from elaborating on that. ;)

Ah ok, I thought you were asking because you were from WA too, haha.

I did find this article on one of the "super heroes" here:

and

Whoa! This Phoenix Jones guy, if this guy is who the internet says who I think this guy is, then I used to train with this guy at my MMA gym. He's a pro mixed martial artist. What the hell!??!

^
You could become the 1st!

Well I'm already part of a mysterious order of martyrs, dedicated to helping the poor and downtrodden. We call ourselves doctors. We've got uniforms and gadgets and even a helicopter (how many superheroes have access to a helicopter).
