Real Genius Movie Reboot Set As NBC Comedy Series

Enterprise is Great

NBC is developing Real Genius, a single-camera comedy based on the 1985 movie starring Val Kilmer.

Written by Workaholics co-executive producer Craig DiGregorio and David King (Parks And Recreation), Real Genius is a present-day reboot of the 1980s film, set as a workplace comedy. The show centers on the relationship between a rock star-like genius — the character played by Kilmer in the movie — and a sheltered, naive co-worker.

And another reboot which I don't really mind as long as it doesn't suck.

Hmmm, I'm torn. I love the movie but am apprehensive about how this might turn out. A bad sign straight off is "work place comedy". I guess a show about college kids doesn't hit the right demographics?

Well, there's one easy place they can improve on the original - the casting on "Mitch". I always thought the actor they used in the movie was the worst part of the film.

While not exactly an obscure 80s movie, it's still incredibly weird they're choosing it to make a series out of.

But what do I know, Fox is trying to get a Bud Bundy spin-off in the works too.

I knew a guy who looked just like Lazlo, so much so that I could NEVER remember his name! I just love that Lazlo=Brooks, looking so very different.

I don't know how they can call it a reboot if the only resemblance to the film is the title and possibly character names, which they must have had to pay a price for. The series description sounds no different than anything else on TV with a workplace setting, unless that workplace is the college, in which case it sounds like "Community" to me, though I've never seen it.

Well I will tell you IT WILL SUCK big time! (Like most things now do)

I love that movie AND WONT EVER WATCH THIS!!

My favourite 80s movie! (One of them anyway)

Absolutely NO PURITY left in this world..... Its mostly all garbage in my opinion.....

Its really very sad :(

Sounds like a cross between Big Bang Theory and The Office, to be honest.

Agree. In the film, it was based at a college with genius students. It sounds like The Big Bang Theory, but about the students instead of professors.
I'll watch it if it's funny.

As I grew older, and got a job in the defense industry, Real Genius didn't age so well for me. Most of the film is still pretty funny, right up until they commit fucking treason. :cardie:

I just don't see the point of this show, other than to try to sponge off the popularity of The Big Bang Theory.

Well they have NOTHING GOOD TO MAKE anymore so they take GOLD and make it into garbage!! (Which ppl think is good (SOME PEOPLE))

Agree. That is the reason. Back in the '80s when Magnum P.I. was a hit a series called Matt Houston was created. When Three's Company was a hit We Got It Made.

etc.

Ah, so it is treason to stop your country from carrying out illegal assassinations? Glad I don't live there.

Um. Whut? I must be forgetting part of the film, 'cause I don't remember any assassination attempt in the movie. I remember a CLASSIFIED US government laser system test that our "heroes" sabotaged by sneaking onto a military base, sneaking into a military aircraft, and sabotaging the computer, out of self-righteous anti-military liberal rage.

You try sabotaging a classified military weapon test and see what the charges are.

Plus of course the charges, probably from the FBI, for causing said weapon to fire on a civilian neighborhood.

Yes, I'm afraid, whatever your motivations, it's treason to sabotage a military program. It's what enemy spies do.
