Reading space adventure and space opera....

I'm curious. Around here I've noticed folks have diverse tastes in SF and Fantasy literature, as diverse as their interests in films and television works. But I'd like to know what fans of space adventure and space opera look for and like to find in their reads.

Are you looking for setting, well thought out concepts, character, world building, near future, far future, whatever..?

What do you look for in a space adventure or space opera novel or short story?

Anyone?

For short stories I like the high concept stuff like Asimov and Niven.

Novels? Depends on my mood. Military SF, Space Opera, High Concept, Near Future, Far Future.

My interest in fantasy has atrophied over the years. I just feel like I am reading the same thing over and over again.
