TWOK- Khan TSFS- Kruge TFF- Sybok TUC- Chang GEN- Soran FC- Borg Queen INS- Ru'afo NEM- Shinzon XI- Nero I don't count V'ger or the Whale Probe as villains, really.
1. Kruge (The Search for Spock) - Great scene-chewing goodness from Christopher Lloyd. Ranks right up with Kang, Kor and Koloth. 2. Chang (The Undiscovered Country) - Another great scene chewer. Loved the whole Klingon quoting Shakespeare. 3. Khan (The Wrath of Khan) - Man has a legitimate axe to grind, unlike Shinzon and Nero. Only wish we could have gotten Montalban and Shatner together not across a view screen. 4. Shinzon (Nemesis) - Really liked the job Tom Hardy did in this film. Too bad he didn't have better material to work with. 5. Nero (Star Trek 2009) - Solid job with not so fresh material. They probably needed to have Bana on screen more. 6. Sybok (The Final Frontier) - Not sure I'd classify him as a villain. 7. Soran (Generations) - Like Sybok not sure I'd classify him as a villain. 8. Borg Queen (First Contact) - Ruined the Borg. Though it wasn't due to any fault of Alice Krige. 9. Ru'afo (Insurrection) - The only one one the list that comes across as a joke. Poor material... poor performance.
1. Khan 2. Nero 3. Borg Queen 4. Sybok 5. Kruge 6. Shinzon 7. Probe 8. V'Ger 9. Soran 10. Whoever the villain in Star Trek 2 is going to be. 11. Chang 12. Ru'Afu
I think it'd be more accurate to rank Klaa or the "fake God-head" thing as the villain in Star Trek V. Sybok may be the misguided plot-catalyst, but I don't think one could reasonably stretch the word "villain" to include him. If you're arguing that he hijacked the Enterprise, well so did Kirk in TSFS.
I'm not gonna rank anyone, just spout out some thoughts: -if I *were* to rank the list, I'd probably put Nero somewhere around the middle. Great actor, but just blah character all around. -There's something Disneyesque about the Borg Queen, and I'm serious. Many of the female villains have this femme fatale, full of attitude quality to them. Many of the villains in general are pretty grandiose yet somehow mysterious and sleek. Add in a song and dance and I think she'd be a fit, but we have Alice Krige to thank for the quality of the role. -I'm so glad that Mark Ruafo went from Insurrection to playing the Incredible Hulk
Where was Mark Ruffalo supposed to have been in Insurrection? (Apoligies if that's merely meant as a joke.) As for ranking the villains: 1 - Khan. The obvious choice, at least for me. 2 - Kruge. Maybe not exactly the most popular among fans, but I found Christopher Lloyd's villain here to be genuinely creepy. 3 - Chang. Christopher freaking Plummer. 4 - Soran. Malcolm McDowell is the only consistently watchable part of Generations, but he still should not have been the one to cause Kirk's death. 5 - Nero. A bit too easily defeated in the end, but still a better villain than some of the others. 6 - "God". Yes, the movie he appears in is below par and, yes, the method by which our heroes get to him is hopelessly contrived.... and yes, he's defeated a bit easier than one might expect.... but actor George Murdock did well enough with what he was given. 7 - The Borg Queen. Why is she ranked below Nero and the "God" creature? Simply because she's a completely unnecessary addition to an already formidable opponent. The Borg were always creepy enough on their own (before the business with Hugh). This also paved the way for their wimpy appearances on Star Trek: Voyager, which was inexcusable. At least the movie she appears in is one of the better Trek film adventures. 8 - Ru'Afo. A lame villain in a very bland entry. Still doesn't make him the worst. 9 - Shinzon. Points for his Romulan/Reman wardrobe, but that's about the only compliment I can muster for ol' Shinzon. A terrible movie with a weak villain. If they were going to borrow heavily from Wrath of Khan, the least they could have done would have been to come up with a strong villain and a scene-stealing actor to play the part. Tom Hardy provides neither. If I could count V'Ger and the Whale Probe as villains, they would rank fourth and fifth, respectively.
Chang (TUC) Borg Queen (FC) Soran (GEN) All the others excepting 1 Loony Toons villains Khan - A pathetic joke of a villain who drags down both the film and episode he's a part of.
Top Trek movie villains? Orci, Kurtzman, and Abrams! Just kidding! Berman and Piller for writing Insurrection. Not kidding.
You are my hero. But, I would further add that pretty much all the film villains were jokes. The thing is, in the nearly 800 hours of TV Trek, there really are very few true "villains". Most of them more appropriately fall under the "trickster" label. And the villains the were seen over the years had the benefit of being fleshed-out over several (or many) episodes. Star Trek is simply the wrong medium to really try and develop a proper two-hour film evil-doer. Unfortunately, TPTB haven't figured that out yet.
On the arrogant scale. V'Ger . I don't personally recognize your people as true lifeforms, Whaleprobe . I can't be bothered by talking to you, prior to destroying you. Nero . I didn't lift a finger to protect my own wife's life, and it's all your fault. Shinzon . Romulan's don't have child labor laws, and the whole universe revolves around me. Sybok . I'm perfect justified in Vulcan mind fucking your entire crew, so they'll follow my every whim. .
1] Khan - Violent, insane revenge featuring rich, Corinthian leather. [ST:II] 2] Chang - Shakespearean, over the top, cold warrior perfection. [ST:VI] 3] Kruge - A villain who took us up to 88 miles per hour to see some serious shit. [ST:III] 4] Nero - Your average, blue collar, genocidal Joe six pack. [ST:XI] 5] The God Alien - What does God need with a SAG nomination? [ST:V] 6] Borg Queen - Erotic and unsettling, like a midget porn star, naked, riding a Shetland pony. [ST:VIII] 7] Soran - He would definitely hurt a fly. Then he'd build a rocket to blow up the Sun. [ST:VII] 8] Shinzon - He showed us his true nature. Oddly enough, that nature was baldness. [ST:X] 9] Ru'afo - F. Murray Abraham as a stretched Forehead of the Week. Le sigh. [ST:IX] * I don't consider the whale probe, V'GER, or Sybok to be villains. * It was difficult for me to choose Khan over Chang, because I just LOVE the way Chang chews the scenery. However, after much effort, I think Khan chewed just a little more.
Good: 1) Khan - A hoot. The dialog he had and the way he delivered it was so entertaining. I love the way he enunciated his words in such an over-the-top manner. 2) Chang - Pretty much the same as Khan, but not quite as cool. His last words before being blown to smithereens was the biggest laugh I got in all the movies (in a good way). 3) The Borg Queen - I loved her arrogance and sexuality. Very menacing and fascinating. So-So: 1) Kruge - I thought he was all right, but pretty forgettable. What he did to Kirk's son was terrible, but I can't remember him saying or doing anything else that left much of an impression on me. 2) Nero - Bana's performance was excellently intense and his plan was admirably diabolical, but his motivation and dialog was so stupid it made me hate the character. 3) Shinzon - Same as Nero. Fantastic, charismatic performance. Awful character. Bad: 1) Ru'afo - Everything about this character sucked. Lame make-up, lame writing. Waste of a great actor. 2) Soren - Another waste of a great actor on a nothing character. I've only seen parts of "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier". I know/remember next to nothing about Sybok.
Good 1. Khan 2. Chang 3. The Borg Queen 4. The Whale Probe 5. Soran Mixed 6. Sybok (well-acted, but conceptually incomprehensible) Not Good 7. Ru'afo 8. Kruge 9. Shinzon (I have to think Tom Hardy was poorly edited; he was excellent in Inception) 10. V'Ger 11. Nero
TWOK- Khan FC- Borg Queen TUC- Chang TSFS- Kruge TFF- Sybok GEN- Soran NEM- Shinzon XI- Nero INS- Ru'afo I didn't think of Sybok as an actual villain, but did find him an interesting, enigmatic character who was fun to watch.
Someone needs to explain to me what is so special about Khan. Sure the premise is good, and he maybe he would have fared better in that hands of a competent director, but the guy one screen was a fucking joke--and not a particularly funny one.
