Ok, so the Wife Unit (AKA: SWMBO) is now in the Wilmont Cancer Center for vigorous testing and evaluation and (eventually) treatment of her leg.

As we were packing last night, she presented me with a gift, more or less it's a tool for my lathe. If you must know it's a dial indicator on a magnetic base.

I was explaining this to a friend over MSN, how we randomly give each other gifts from time to time... and he considered this odd. A quick poll of other friends/contacts also consider this odd.

Wife-Unit and I are always presenting each other with random dodads and whatchamacallits. I'll be at a flea-market or a junk-shop and see something and think "Yeah that's for her" and grab it. She does the same thing with books and the odd tool/random gadget.

I never considered this behavior odd, yet 7/10 of my friends consider it "strange." What says the poupluation at large?

If I see something I think my husband would like or want I'll get it. I am more prone to doing it than him as I have better connections.

It's how he's gotten most of this comic books so far, really.

SWMBO seems to have a rather good understanding of machine tools for someone who has an accounting degree. Either she's a closet machinist or she actually listens to my endless prattling and discourse on the subject.

My wife and I do it all the time, but mostly just little things. So no, I don't think it's odd at all.

I'm thinking about it and I fail to see why it would be odd at all. You know the likes/dislikes of the other person in question and you see a random bauble that you know he/she/it will like... *shrug*

Could be it is time to upgrade my MSN friends. :guffaw:

I agree, very loving and normal for people in love.

Your MSN firends are just jealous, poor babies.

Best if progress to the wife health wise.

On the rare occasions that I've had a girlfriend that lasted more than seven hours, I have done this. I would assume it to be a normal impulse for people in that kind of relationship....

Seven hours?

7 hours would be quite long for a single date, you could probably fit a few separate dinners into that.

My husband and I give each other the odd non-celebratory gift. I'll buy him a dvd, he'll buy me a scarf. I find it odd that folks find it odd.

What's instant cream sauce.

Does your friend have a girlfriend? That may or may not determine the reason why they think its odd.

I, however, don't. The little things like that can be a lot more worthwhile than the big things.
