R.I.P. Jan Hooks

Wow :(. That's really sad. RIP Mrs. Hooks. Her name sounds really familiar. Who did she play in 3rd Rock from the Sun and in Designing Women?

A truly funny, and talented lady. Sad to see her pass on. Rest in peace, Jan. :(

She was great as Jenna's mom on 30 Rock.

She was also the voice of Manjula on The Simpsons.

Strange and sad.

RIP

She was a part of one of SNL's all-time greatest casts, yet even when surrounded by so much talent she managed to stand out from the crowd. She was great.

She also had a small but memorable role in Batman Returns. One of my favorite movies.

A funny, talented lady. She will be missed.

As one gets older, it's always sad to see members of one's own generation dying. Robin Williams was my age, Jan Hooks was 6 years younger.

I remember her from even earlier material. From 1978 to 79, she appeared upon the Alanta based UHF station WTCG Channel 17 that aired "Tush", a kind of bargin basement "Saturday Night Live". The schtick I recall most was a recurring skit called "Captain Space". She played a Dale Arden type character called "the Ravishing Darla", girlfriend of the intrepid Captain Space. Whenever the crew were threatened with mortal peril, Hooks as Darla would chew the scenery with considerable gusto, screaming, "Oh my god! We'll all be killed!!!" And when I say "bargin basement", I mean the "set" was nothing more a counter in front of a black backdrop. the crew, except Darla wore collapsible gallon water jugs as "helmets" and baggy, silver lame' sweatsuits (which the the station promoted in those Ron-Co type commercials) as "spacesuits". Once, the show got Isaac Asimov on camera and asked him the the age old question, "What 3 books would you want to have if stranded upon an island. He named "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare", "Canterbury Tales" and "volume number one of 'Captain Space'". Merciful Mogg those skits were "bad", but Hooks gave them her all.

Sincerely,

Bill

(If WTCG Channel 17 sounds oddly familiar, well, it was eventually bought by Ted Turner and rebranded as TBS.)

Actually found a few of the clips. I'll warn you it's pretty "rough", but it's interesting to see her really early in her career.

I loved her as Carlene (Charlene's sister) on Designing Women and the voice of Manjula on The Simpsons. I'm shocked that she passed away. :( RIP.

She was also the voice of Angeline, the robot who came between Bender and Flexo on FUTURMA.

And yeah, sad to see her go.

I just saw one of the clips of her on SNL as Kathie Lee Gifford and am reminded of how funny that period was, and how how funny she could be; I especially loved that sketch where she played one of these two singers who always sang 'Clang Clang Went The Trolley'.

She's gone, and I will most definitely miss her now.

Aw man, I liked her a lot in the SNL days.

On 3rd Rock, she was their landlady's daughter I believe.

Her character also dated Harry for a while. Like this...

Whenever I think of her, I think of a scene where she was pressuring Harry to get married and have a baby. Harry waffled on the subject, saying he felt he should focus on his career first. She paused for a moment and reminded him, "Baby, you do not HAVE a career!"

She also had a small but memorable role in Batman Returns. One of my favorite movies.

Found it.

"Our research tells us the voters like fingers." :guffaw:

She had the best deliberately phony show-biz smile in the business. She was irreplaceable and I'll miss her a lot.

I thought this weeks SNL did a touching tribute to her (they just showed an old clip, but it was still sweet).

Also she was on SNL in a time where there were only two women on the show. Her and Victoria Jackson, after Nora Dunn left over the Anthony Dice Clay controversy. She carried a lot of the load since Victoria Jackson mostly played 'Dumb blonde' parodies. So she had most of the load for female characters in a time where women weren't treated that well on the show.

She also gave Jackson a good kick in the ass over the way she behaved on the show ('I can't believe that you speak that way all of the time, use your lower register!')
