R.I.P. Dave-Niehaus

I've never been much of a sports-fan. Or much of a baseball-fan for that matter. However, I have been a fan of Mr. Niehaus for many years.

Back in 1985-86, I worked for a small radio station in Forks, Washington. We carried Mariners baseball games, and it was my job many nights to sit at the board and run local commercials at the appropriate times. As a result I got to/had to listen to a lot of Mariners baseball. Over that summer, I came to appreciate the pure artistry of the way Dave Niehuas called those games. I mean, if he could make someone like me with very little interest in the game to pay attention, he had to be doing something right.

His induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame was fairly earned and very well deserved. And, Niehaus is thus far the only person associated with the Mariners to have been thus honored, as far as I know.

Over the years I have seen nothing to indicate or even hint that he was no less than the man we heard on the air: genuine, sincere, funny, knowledgeable, and a lot more. Without hyperbole, I think it is safe to say that Dave Niehaus became and will remain an icon here in the Pacific Northwest.

He will be missed this coming baseball season.

His Grand Slam call was the absolute best in Baseball. Was he also the guy who said "And that ball will Fly Away" on any Home Run?

Anyway, he was a great announcer and will sorely be missed.

RIP :(

Yep, "Fly Away" was one of his. Appropriately, that is the headline of the Seattle Times sports section this morning.

I initially had him confused with another Seattle sports pioneer . . . Steve Niehaus, the lineman who was the first draft pick in Seahawks history.
