R.I.P.D-This MIGHT be a success this summer

What is R.I.P.D.?

Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds headline the 3D supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. as two cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect and serve the living from an increasingly destructive array of souls who refuse to move peacefully to the other side.
Veteran sheriff Roy Pulsifer (Bridges) has spent his career with the legendary police force known as R.I.P.D. tracking monstrous spirits who are cleverly disguised as ordinary people. His mission? To arrest and bring to justice a special brand of criminals trying to escape final judgment by hiding among the unsuspecting on Earth.
Once the wise-cracking Roy is assigned former rising-star detective Nick Walker (Reynolds) as his junior officer, the new partners have to turn grudging respect into top-notch teamwork. When they uncover a plot that could end life as we know it, two of R.I.P.D.’s finest must miraculously restore the cosmic balance...or watch the tunnel to the afterlife begin sending angry souls the very wrong way.

To me, this sound like a cross between G vs E and Men In Black-quite interesting (to me, anyway), What do others think?

With all the big movies out this summer it'll get lost in the shuffle. And yeah, it's MIB - undead edition.

MiB meets Ghostbusters by way of True Grit...? Could be interesting. Could be utterly forgettable. All I know is that I never trust comedy movie trailers. For all you know, every funny moment is in the trailer and the rest of the film is crap. I'll definitely look out for this one on DVD though.

I saw the trailer about a month ago when I went to see Oblivion. I think it looks cool and plan to check it out.

Of all the big budget movies scheduled for release this summer, this one is the most likely to flop in my opinion.
Fully agreed Vulcan. Over at BoxOfficeTheory it's a source of laughter. The Ghostbuster meets MIB vibe is so apparent.

If this does $60m domestic....for it's whole run, I'll be shocked.

This is based on the Dark Horse Comic...I'll be checking this out. This was one of my dark horse picks of the summer season. I don't think it will be a huge hit, but it'll make some noise and maybe surprise some people and get some attention one of those films that kind of comes out of nowhere. The cast alone is pretty impressive.

Pluses: Jeff Bridges, Mary Louise-Parker, the aforementioned Ghostbuster meets Men in Black vibe.

Minuses: Ryan Reynold, Jeff Bridges' cheesy accent.

Could go either way but I'll definitely check it out.

The gang and I saw the trailer for the first time this week (attached to RED 2). The audience seemed to like it and we'll probably go and see it.

Ouch. It wins the award for most aptly titled film of the year, though.

The trailers just made it look awful and derivative as hell, so this isn't particularly surprising.

Wow-- that's one heck of a bomb financially. Not even DVD sales are going to help recoup that loss.

The problem with the film is that it had too many concepts going on at once. Was it a take-off on MiB? Was it a supernatural film? Was it a buddy cop film? Was it a comedy? Was it going to implode upon release?

You just described one totally straightforward concept. The problem is simply that said concept is totally unappealing.

I cannot help but think of this show when I see the trailers.

The moment I saw the trailer I could think of nothing but Good vs Evil. God I loved that show!

I actually liked RIPD. Sure it was a MIB rip off but Jeff Bridges was funny and it was an amusing story.
