Quinto Interview for Carnegie Mellon

I was reading an interview about Zach Quinto for Carnegie Mellon which had an interesting comment. (direct link to article here)

Not too long after those dark days of bearded joblessness faded away, Quinto receives an email from a friend. A new movie is in the pre-production phase, the latest installment in one of Hollywood's biggest science-fiction franchises. J.J. Abrams, mastermind behind TV's Alias and Lost, is set to direct a Star Trek movie with an all-new cast playing the familiar characters. The email Quinto receives directs him to a Web site where fans have listed a dozen names of actors they think should be considered for the iconic role of the pointed-ear Vulcan. Quinto's name is on the fans' casting wish list.

Did he visit this website? I remember Temis has mentioned his name early on in one of the threads.

If he did, I wasn't aware of it, but I guess I wouldn't rule it out, either. I do remember Temis saying that she thought Quinto would make a good Spock.

That's a nice feature article. I recall a TrekToday article last year about Quinto returning to Carnegie-Mellon for some event, but this one gets into a lot more detail, and more of his early background, as well.

I really want to know why he has to exercise his fingers for the Vulcan salute. Or was it for the neck pinch??

Wow, could that really be a reference to little old us? I don't recall that there were dozens of candidates. But I recall mentions of that guy who played Brutus in Rome (still a good candidate for some Rommie or Vulcan) and Ben Afflick (with Matt Damon as Kirk).

I really want to know why he has to exercise his fingers for the Vulcan salute.

I got the impression that was more training than exercise -- sort of developing the muscle memory so that he'd be able to do the salute without having to think about it. Holding the fingers in that position isn't something which comes naturally to a lot of people; I still struggle to do the salute with my left hand, and I think I recall reading recently that Quinto is left-handed, so he might have the same difficulty getting his non-dominant hand to do the salute.

I'm going to have to go back over it a couple more times -- I sort of skimmed it the first time around.

Aha. From a TrekToday article dated January 2008:

The Vulcan hand sign is something that Quinto has had to practice. "I am left-handed, so I can only do it on my left, but I do exercises," he explained. "I rubber-band my ring finger and pinky finger. It is part of my personal training."
