I had a friend ask me this question and I don't know the answer to it...............Is there a book or series of books that cover the origins of the Borg?

Um... yes, but it's a bit of a spoiler to say so. It's a twist, and it's a fairly recent work, so you might want to just punt the specific answer since, IIRC, you're going through the new novel continuity now.

Spoiler: The book or series is...

The recent "Destiny" trilogy, by David Mack, "Gods of Night," "Mere Mortals," and "Lost Souls."

There are also some Strange New Worlds short-stories and I think some comics, but the one in the spoiler is the answer in the mainline novel continuity.
