Quick question about the New Star Trek movie for New Frontier Fans.

I just wanted to ask fans of the new Frontier novel series who have scene Trek XI a quick question.

Did any of you think Chris Pine's Kirk was a lot like Calhoun?

But then, I've always had a pretty specific idea of Calhoun in my head.

I didn't think so either. What parallels did you draw between the two? Kirk had a tendancy to get his ass kicked for several minutes before he was able to fight back, while someone like Calhoun rarely even gets hit due to how fast and deadly he is. The Calhoun - Picard dynamic was kind of close to the Kirk-Pike dynamic...but I still say no.

There are a few superficial similarities in that they both have a cocky, 'bad boy' vibe, although Calhoun's is more roguish while nuKirk is a cowboy; but that's about it, I would say. Calhoun has accomplishment, cunning, a personal history (both good and bad) that lends him a certain gravitas, and generally is a more rounded, three-dimensional character. NuKirk, on the other hand, is basically a pair of testicles with a mouth attached to them.

McDermott is exactly who I always pictured until I saw Stargate Atlantis' Joe Flanigan. His charatcer, John Shepperd, would be very different from Mackenzie Calhoun, but I think Flanigan is the guy to pull it off. Of course, casting comments should probably be made in thread meant for exactly that...

As someone who did not enjoy the new film, but does- surprisingly- like Calhoun (surprisingly in that tough, larger-than-life "rogue" figures rarely hold my interest), I'd say they're nothing alike. Calhoun is a product of his culture and his upbringing. The Xenexians are a very tactless, very direct and confrontational people, who live hard lives and until recently were oppressed by offworlders. Calhoun was hardened and acquired his "edge" fighting those oppressors. Kirk is simply a rebel. He has no depth, in my opinion, to justify his behaviour. His choices in life were far easier. So, outwardly, maybe they appear alike, but I personally think in truth they are nothing alike.
