Questions from non Trek fans or people wanting to get into trek.

Hello,

I was wandering what kind of questions people ask you about Star Trek or if someone wants to get into it what kind of things are they apprehensive about and want to know?

Looking to write some editorial posts on my site and looking for some ideas :-)

The common one I'm often asked: "What's the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars?"
My answer at this point: "Star Trek takes place in the future, Star Wars in the past."

The trick is not to overload them with too much detail. Speak in broad strokes at first, without trying to convey every obscure nuance and bit of Trek lore. If they want you to expand on a point, they'll ask you.

A cautionary tale: Years ago, a co-worker asked a friend of mine who the Flash was, since the 1990s TV version had just debuted. My friend, an avid comics buff, launched into a long complicated dissertation on all the various incarnations of the character: Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, Wally West, Golden Age, Silver Age, Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis, etc

Watching from the sidelines, I could see the questioner's eyes glaze over as she was buried under way more explanation than she'd actually needed or wanted. By the end, she was more confused than when she had started and was probably wishing she had never asked the question in the first place.

DON'T do this when somebody asks you about STAR TREK. :)

(A better answer would have probably been something like, "The Flash? Oh, he's a popular DC Comics superhero who has been around for decades now. His deal is that the he's the Fastest Man on Earth and can run at super-speed. What else would you like to know about him?")

That may be too much for some folks.

This might be better....
He's a comic book character, who runs really fast

After "Where should I start?", the one I get most often is "Which one has [insert character/species of interest here]?" and that's usually from folks who are interested in TV Trek and are familiar with the AOS movies. Another, and the one I wish folks asked more often, is "which one do you think I'd like?" because that's usually a prelude to a fun conversation about their favorite books and movies, or what other sci-fi they're familiar with.
