Questions for a project...

I'm getting my sources together--as an initial assignment--for a class project together on how Asian-Americans are represented in the Star Trek universe...(and hopefully, it would be a critical essay that I would be able to do something professionally with).

A few questions, off the top of my head:

  • There is an Asian male on one of the ships in the novels who speaks with a Southern accent. What is his name? (I've been out of the ST loop, so forgive me).
  • What book did Miranda Kadohata first appear in? (This would give me an idea of who created her). Have we been given any information on her husband aside from his name? If so, which book discusses this?
  • I'm assuming 'Greater Than the Sum' was the first appearance of T'ryssa Chen(sp)? And, that Christopher created the character?
  • What book is Leslie Parrish introduced in? (I'm assuming it is one of the 'Errand of Vengeance' books).
In the words of Mr. Caesar: Thank you! Thank you!

Romeo Takahashi is the blonde Asian ops officer in the New Frontier novels who first appears in 'Once Burned' and has a Southern accent.

Miranda first appeared in Q&A, so was created by KRAD. Losing The Peace has a lot of family background on her.

Trys first appeared in GTTS indeed and was created by Chris.

you've also got Rana Desai in the VGD novels, who's a South Asian Indian. and Choudry in the TNG novels who's Indian. IIRC, she debuted in BD.

Yep, first half of the combined trilogy, but I don't recall her being described as Asian-American. Of course, the character is named for the actress who played the canonical Carolyn Palamas.

No, Jasminder Choudhury debuted in Greater Than the Sum. David Mack created the character in the outline for Destiny, but it takes a long time to write a trilogy, so she appeared in my book first, and we developed her jointly.

Other Asians in Vanguard include Lt. Ming Xiong, Capt. Zhao Sheng, and Capt. Atish Khatami (Iranian). Titan's crew includes the minor character Ensign Tasanee Panyarachun (Thai) as well as the canon character Nurse Alyssa Ogawa.

And as usual in Trek, we'll ignore the distinction between Asian-American and just plain Asian. ;)

Thank you for the comments, everyone.

Yes, those in the novels are not necessarily Asian-American; I am using the term in regards to the performers who portrayed characters in the Trek franchise onscreen...using the portrayals of other people of color, particularly African-Americans as a compare/contrast.

If I may reply to Ian (may I use 'Ian'?): Leslie Parrish was, IIRC, not actually full-Asian, but a Eurasian...(and yes, I am aware that is the name of the actress who portrayed Carolyn Palamas).

Thanks again for the replies.;)

We do see her talking to her husband on the comms several times throughout the different books. I definitely remember he warning him about the Borg in one of the Destiny books, and I think she had at least one or two conversations with him in Losing the Peace. Here's his Memory Beta page: Vicenzo Farrenga.

Yeah, I checked out his page on Memory Beta.

I'm assuming he is racially ambiguous at this point, because I don't recall any further info on him.

Interesting.

Thanks for the link, though, JD...;)

More question(s), if someone can be so kind to answer:

  • There was an old Star Trek: Communicator (or another ST publication) that stated to the effect that African-American males were better suited for the Klingon make-up during TNG's run. Can I get the name of the person who stated this?
Is it possible to get the issue of the publication where this was stated?

  • During DS9's run, there was a make-up artist who stated in one ST publication to the effect that he always wanted to put Avery Brooks in Klingon make-up, which was eventually done in one of the DS9 episodes where Brooks as Sisko goes undercover with Odo and O'Brien. I forget where this was stated; so, can anyone recall the publication where this was mentioned?

Thank you.
