questions about nintendo ds

Hubby promised me a nintendo ds as a "congrats" for finishing the bar exam. So I see there's a "ds," a "dsi," and a "ds lite."

What's the differences between these? Why would I pick one version over another?

The original DS is completely obsolete at this point. Both the DS Lite and DSi offer advantages that the other doesn't, but the original isn't even worth considering.

The main advantage of the DS Lite is that it is backwards compatible with the Game Boy Advance. The GBA was extremely popular and has a huge library of original games and ports from the NES and SNES (a few Genesis ones too).

The DSi comes with a camera (although kinda crappy) and the ability to play games you download off Nintendo's DSWare service (simliar to the Wii's WiiWare and Virtual Console). Although it won't play GBA games and the DSi costs more than the DS Lite.

Personally I would go with the DS Lite because of the backwards compatibility with the GBA and lower price.

This should probably be in the gaming forum :p

The DSi also has the ability to play music and has web browsing features. I think the DSi also has a larger screen, not sure on this though. I have a DS Lite myself and I love it. I don't think you can really go wrong with either the DS Lite or the DSi

Basically what the others said. I'd go with the DS Lite because it's cheaper and I couldn't see myself using the extra features that the DSi has.

I don't normally go there, so I didn't even think of that.

I don't need a crappy camera--but I don't really care about backwards compatibility, either.

I'm not the "action" games person. I like the ken-ken, brainage, sudoku stuff. But Hubby's liking the idea of playing the OLD games reborn on this.

I have a DS Lite. I see no need for a DSI when I have an MP3 player, a camera and a laptop with internet access.

What she said.

While the extra memory may come into play in the future, there are no games at present, nor do there seem to be any in the immediate future, that will fully take advantage of it. At best, there may be some novelty additions.

Save your self some money and pick up a DS Lite.

Just asked mr trampledamage - he agrees with the consensus here, go for the DS Lite.

His opinion is that the added widgets on the DSi aren't worth it and if you just want a DS for playing games then the Lite is the way to go.

Enjoy :)

The DSware is a cool feature on the DSi; I have March of the Minis which is a good puzzle game for $8. But I think that I would still go with the DS Lite. I would have if I didn't win my DSi in an arcade.

Go with the DSLite. Even if you don't think you care about backwards compatibility, you might find a GBA game you like and regret not being able to play it.

Well, thanks all.

Looks like Hubby will be buying me the DSlite. And since he's working at Costco today--he might just buy it today.

Meanwhile, I'm doing all the housecleaning I've been postponing from studying. And packing up a lot of my study stuff.

I guess I'm getting some confidence in having passed, after all.

I have a Nintendo DS system and while it's obsolete to the others at the moment, I really enjoy playing the games on there..favorites are the brain age games and mario bro games! :) And let's not forget about those racing games either!

Well, I haven't gotten it yet, and the consensus seems to be for a ds-lite. My sister-in-law has one she says she's not using, and offered me that one. Pretty nice of her, but then Hubby's family is like that.

Yeah, I'd like to try the brainage

I have a DS lite and I enjoy it a lot. I play Touchmaster and Word Jong. I too prefer the puzzle type games.

If you like puzzle type games you should get Picross DS. This game is so addictive...I've had it for over a year and I still play it quite often.

I would go with the DS Lite. It has the GBA compatibility which gives you hundreds of more games to choose from. It is also really cheap.

For me, the DSI is a complete waste of time. It plays the exact same games as the DS Lite.
It has slightly larger screens, but not enough to make much difference. It has lower battery life. It has two crappy cameras, both have worse quality than you would find on an average cellphone and it isn't really used in any games worth having, just for silly stuff like "take a photo of your face and stretch it around with the stylus" which is fun for about 5 minutes.
It has downloadable games, but they are mainly very simple ones and there hasn't been a killer app released for DSIware to date. Half of them are crappy versions of alarm clocks and calculators featuring Nintendo characters and aren't even games.
The music player is pretty meh, because the DSI doesn't have great speakers. Any ipod blows it away. The internet stuff is pretty terrible and slow.

It also costs a lot more money than the Lite.

Another thing to consider, is that it is likely Nintendo will likely create a new portable system in the next year or 2. Might as well go with the cheaper Lite now, and wait for the better new system.

I have a DS Lite, myself. Great system. No complaints. I considered the DSi, but I just didn't think the features were worth the added cost. Everything the DSi adds, my phone does already. So, I just didn't see the point.
