Question on Star Trek Online interior maps?

I'm new to ST Online, and online mutliplayer gaming, and was just wondering about the map sizes?

The game has all the regular Ships from Star Trek but the interiors are way larger than I expected them to be and also I don't get how you can buy any type of Bridge or Engineering interior for any type of Starship regardless of size. The decks appear to 20 feet high and floor space is immense, even adding extra console stations to the Bridge etc?

I was just wondering if this was a common thing for online multiplayer games or if it's something unique to Star Trek online as it's based slightly further in the future?

Technically none of the bridges are linked to your ships, since the ship is essentially your avatar in space and the interiors are just another map you ground avatar can walk around in.
The size of most interior starship maps is due to engine limitations they had in the beginning.
They had problems with camera movement in too cramped interiors.
Those problems are mostly resolved by now, which is why the Constitution interior map/bridge has a much better scale (even if still a bit larger then the real one).
In addition the bridges were intended to be social zones where a player could invite his fleetmates and friends to, so they wanted to give them a bit of room to move around, that's why some of the bridges appear big enough to park a Defiant ship in.
I believe any future bridge and interior will be more like the Constitution map.
Although I don't think we will get a completely new one until they figure out how to include a customized interior into the mission maps.
Example: You have the Connie interior and play the Azura mission. The mission transporter room is the generic one and doesn't look anything like your custom one and slightly breaks immersion.

Edit: BTW... if you are as a new STO player looking for a fleet, we have our own TrekBBS fleet you are welcome to join.
