It’s not that much of a deal. I visited Florida as a kid several times. Outside of the amusement parks, it’s pretty dull. I know some folks down there and from what I see on their Facebook posts, it’s quite uneventful most of the time.

And the gators aren’t that much of a menace like the Nile crocodile or the saltwater crocodile.

I've lived in North Carolina near the Atlantic Ocean for about 30 years and in that time we have only had one "bad" hurricane that caused much damage and we lost electricity for close to a week. Also, one tornado that did any damage. In Illinois, there was a tornado or 6 every Spring. Some summers are HOT, but most aren't. Now, saying this, I've probably jinxed us!

To be fair, "It's another nice day in Florida today" would hardly make the international news...

Outside of a year in Baltimore--to where I moved literally on the day Sandy hit in 2012--I've lived in the Midwest (Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin) my entire life. Really the only major weather events we deal with are the occasional polar vortex, the very rare tornado, and occasional flooding from heavy rain during the summer. Heavy snow hasn't been a thing for a few years.

They've always said about Michigan that if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes. But mostly we get hot summers, cold winters and neither unbearably so.

The weather in Maryland is warmer and more comfortable than in the 60s and 70s. Where I live we catch the edge of the occasional hurricane every few years but it's usually not a biggie.

Honestly, as with probably most of the globe, you just need to get inland imho. Too far west coast, you get all those mudslides, earthquakes, & now fires. To far south east, you get the hurricanes & floods, but if you're inland, & outside of tornado alley, it's fine. You never hear any natural catastrophes coming from Nebraska or Indiana. Heck, I live in upstate New York, & on this side of the Adirondack mountains the only issue is for a few winter weeks, we might get a cold front from Canada. picking up some of the Great Lakes & dumping snow on us. Buy a 4X4 & a shovel. You'll be fine.

Don’t the Great Plains states get tornadoes and -30 windchills?

The problem with being far from bodies of water is you lose the temperature moderating effect of water.
