question about Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2 subtitles

Extrocomp

Fleet Captain

When Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2 first came out and revealed that Number One's name was Una, the subtitle writers botched it. The Netflix subtitles had Pike say "Noona" instead of Una, while the CBS All Access (now Paramount+) subtitles transcribed it as "And, uh".

I just checked and the Netflix subtitles have been corrected to "Una", possibly because of Netflix's "Report a Problem > Problems with subtitles or captions" feature on their website. But have the Paramount+ subtitles been corrected? Can anyone check for me? I'm just curious about which streaming service has the more reliable subtitles.

Interesting. Never saw that. But, even my daughter spotted a captioning error on Disney+. It just happens.

And, uh, they have not been corrected.

Examples, please?

I see typos all the time too and I am sure you do. Can you give me an example of a typo NOW!? That is basically what you are asking for someone to recall an exact instance of an error that happens in maybe 5% of all subtitles is noticed in half of those and makes up a half second of the 25 minutes of dialog. Sadly this is only useful to a small % of the audience so it is not much of a priority to do better, but then again when is a solution that works well over 90% worth improving to fix relatively minor errors?

I am pretty sure these are done using a program to convert voice to text and maybe some intern reads them over without comparing it to the video if the program flags something as possibly incorrect. Perhaps someone could code up a program that feeds in written dialog from the script to help reduce errors and lead towards a more automated workflow for fully AI generated animations in the future.

I see them all the time as well. You usually can figure out the meaning.......I assumed with no proof.....that they use AI similar to Siri or voice to text that does them without a human proofreading.

I'm not interested in typos. I was hoping that fireproof78 had seen some hilarious and memorable mistakes like the one I mentioned in my third post.

Not really hilarious or memorable. What I've noticed is that the subtitles are often timed differently, possibly to ensure that people can read them fast enough with the pace of the film.

I have difficulty hearing but don't want to turn the TV up too loud that it would annoy the neighbors, so I frequently watch with subtitles on. I don't have specific examples on-hand, but there have been several times where the closed-captioning not only omits or alters words, but changes the entire context of the scene to the point where it conveys a different meaning or event.

I was not aware that a reporting feature for closed captioning existed, but I will take advantage of that from now on for the more egregious examples, because it must be extremely frustrating for deaf people to not get the proper subtitles.
