Question about patches on uniforms...

Gotham Central

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Does anyone know why SGC/Atlantis personelle remove the patches from their uniforms when they go off world?

It seems pointless to have the patches at all if they can only be worn on the base. For obvious reasons SGC staff cannot wear their patches outside of the CMC. But that does not explain why they cannot be worn on alien worlds? Aliens have no idea what those patches mean.

It just seems like a waste of resources to manufacture patches that can only be worn on base.

It makes no sense at all, no. It's not as if the aliens in the Pegasus galaxy would recognise the patches or even understand them.
Obviously, the flags woudl have to be changed to duller coloured field versions, a big red and white maple leaf might be a bit unsubtle.

By the way, I often found it strange that SG-1 chose to wear a patch with the Earth Lambda symbol on, when that is the one symbol no other world should recognise as it won't be on anyone elses gate. Why bother?

It's a real world military thing. Special Ops teams remove patches and insignia when they go on missions. I actually found it strange that SG-1, a show with a military consultant had the characters wearing patches in the field (which would be incorrect) while Atlantis, a show without a consultant has the characters removing patches in the field (which is correct).

However, they always seemed to remove the patches when off-base on Earth, probably to avoid people trying to figure out what the patches are.

What makes it even stranger is in the epidsode The Return we see Sheppard leading an SG team and none of them are wearing the team or SGC patches either...its gotta be some really odd Atlantis thing which kinda made some sence (or at least there was some reason behind it) up untill you see a regular SG team who should be wearing them not having them!

Something the Stargate and the SGC are supposed to be classified at the highest levels, they can't exactly be walking around in public with SG armpatches on.

Yeah, that got to me a little. Only thing I can think of, is that SG team commanders are allowed to decide if they want to wear patched off world or not, and Sheppard chose not to wear patches, since that's what he's used to.

The real oddity is later on in the episode when Sheppard is wearing base fatigues he has an SGC patch, when he should have the patch for his SG team on. Then when the Atlantis gang are trying to hijack the puddle jumper, they meet someone from Sheppard's SG team. He has a patch, but you never get a good look to see what it is. I think it says SG-4, but can't confirm that.
