Question about Khan

Carpathia86

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Has anyone else noticed the bracelet-like device Khan had on his left wrist? It seems awfully big to be a watch. Any ideas or beta canon sources on what it is?

I always figured, like much of his costume, that it was supposed to be re-purposed junk that became garments and accessories that they wore on Ceti Alpha V.

It could have been a communicator. However, I noticed that when Khan was using his left arm to restrain the adult Ceti Eel, he adjusted some controls on it before grabbing the tongs with his other hand. Could it be that he was injured at one point, and lost some mobility in this arm? Thus, his wrist device could have been some sort of makeshift electrical implant to help him regain use of his arm. Like so much repurposed junk, it may have started out as a communicator.

Yeah, there is that wire that runs up his arm from the wristband:

...But I'm not seeing the "adjusting the controls" part. His glowed right hand does move close to his left wrist at one point, but it never actually touches the bracelet. The idea of a cybernetic/prosthetic device is a cool one, but this particular scene isn't good support for it.

Of course, we might speculate on why the mighty superman, once capable of throwing people around like ragdolls, now seems to be struggling with a creature the size of his fist. Perhaps some cybernetic augmentation indeed is required to compensate for injuries or whatever? But his old touch isn't gone, as we see him lift Terrell with one arm on the captain's convenient chest handle and the other, well, somewhere farther down...

It's an electrical muscle stimulation control bracelet. Even the genetically engineered don't stay ripped like that unless they work out, and Ceti Alpha V doesn't provide many opportunities to lift (besides lifting the occasional Russian). Now everyday is arm day through the magic of electric shocks.

I could have sworn I saw him touch it with his other hand when he set the bowl on top of the container. Perhaps my eyes were deceiving me.

Perhaps you are thinking of the motion right at 0:02 in the Fandango video I posted? It doesn't look like the fingers of his right hand quite reach the wrist doohickey.

From the video Kor posted, it looks to me like he is passing the tongs from his right hand into his left so he can grab the bowls or at least more firmly into his left. Maybe I'd have to see the clip a little further back.

The wrist thingy could be his portable music device. Lots of wiring though...bluetooth isn't what it used to be on Ceti Alpha VI, I mean V.

As for the necklace, I can't imagine Khan having much love for Starfleet so for him to wear that medallion, it must hold a greater significance for him than his hatred of Starfleet. The only reason I can think of is the medallion was given to him by his wife Marla McGivers.
