Question about gif pictures (and my avatar)

Please take a look at my avatar, in particular Shatner's Kirk.

What's wrong with the gif image that causes it to have those spots?

The original picture didn't have them.

I suspect if I posted the non-animated gif of it, the spots might not be there either.

What went wrong?

The closer we get to the movie and a blue eyed Kirk, the more Shatner will fade away.

When you built it you set it up to have pure white pixels be transparent. Said blue spots are actually no spots at all but the color of the side bar of TBBS.

I checked just now...

The transparency is set on a shade of gray, one I suspect is the default since I haven't touched the setting since the program was installed on this computer.
