Q - Your Thoughts?

Gkar

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I still think that Q should've been in the very last TNG movie. What is everyone elses thoughts on this issue?

I think Q turned into an annoying joke of a character very quickly, and I'll be happy to never see him again.

When was the last time an ant talked you out of stepping on its anthill?

I think Q was a pretty good idea way back when, but he's been terribly over-used. Of the Q episodes, only a handful would I consider really good. (Q Who, Tapestry, All Good Things) And in Q Who, it was the Borg that made that episode so outstanding. Q wasn't even in it all that much.

Then featuring him in DS9 and VOY just was over-kill, IMHO. Too much of a good thing. Like eating chocolate cake for dinner every single night for a year. Grows old real fast.

Q is a great character, one of the classics, in fact. I'm glad that he didn't appear in the films as I felt that is story was told. I feel that he was a great TNG enemy and a great foil for Picard. It's not that I wish he hadn't been used in DS9 and Voyager, it's just that I felt he was at his best in TNG.

I really think he should've only been in "Encounter at Farpoint" and "All Good Things..." Would've made it seem more 'Full-Circle.' Plus, of all the other Q episodes, the only one I really dig is the one where he becomes human.

Wow I'm surprised at the dislike of Q!!!!! I can't pick my favorite because I enjoy every Q episode. I think he's a great character.

I don't think it's actually dislike. I think it's genuine fondness for a great character who ended up being overused and misused, and therefore was diminished and not allowed to maintain full power and effect.

Agreed. I honestly never much liked the character- much too arrogant and self-righteous for mine - and most of his appearances were pretty tedious ("Q-Who?", "Tapestry", "All Good Things..." and Voyager's "Death Wish" excepted). I'm glad the character wasn't carried over to the movies.

I like Q, but I didnt see them as God-like beings. I always thought of them as perhaps powerful aliens who could force thoughts into a humans head to make them believe they are experiencing extra ordinary things, but in reality they are not actually doing the things they think they are doing.

I also would have liked more info on why Q and Guinan dont get along. He hinted that she was more than Picard thought she was, but that was it. I think perhaps she was a Q, but decided to play nice with humans and live among them.

No, at least on my part, it's genuine dislike.

It also didn't help that I remember DeLancy from his days polaying the geeky science nerd Eugene on Days of Our Lives. Which, uh, my mother watched. Yeah.

Loved Q. One of the best recurring characters in the franchise. His banter with Picard was priceless, they were excelently paired.

I disliked Q episodes when the series was first on, including the pilot. I found him tedious and annoying, much like the crew did.
But I like the character now. "Tapestry" may be my favorite Q episode. The message in than episode is strong, but not in a bonk! bonk! on the head! kind of way. Really I think it one of the best messages in any Trek episode.
I didn't know that Q shows up in DS9 and Voyager, so I don't know how I will feel about that. Obviously I have a lot of uncharted sectors yet to explore ~

I liked Q. He played off two Trek captains differently: he enjoyed taunting Picard, and trying to pull Janeway.

I know he was only in one DS9 ep, but I like to think it was because he was genuinely afraid Sisko would kick his ass!

I admit I always wondered how Q would have acted around Archer or Kirk.

Big Q fan here. Hide and Q and Q-Pid were the character's lower points.

And post Death Wish... well, the less said the better.

How he could've been incorporated into the movies still fathoms me.

I couldn't agree more. :bolian:

I'm glad someone can see where I'm coming from. To me it would just make sense to have everything close in a complete circle. I wasn't the biggest fan about how post-TNG whenever Q appeared he seemed to become more and more humanised. Anyways...
oh and another thing, Worf leaves the position as Ambassador to Qo'nos and returns to the Enterprise as commander just because ... why exactly? Is it just because he is the Klingon version of Marty McFry who just wants to come along for the ride??? Pfft.

I really dislike the use of Q in Voyager and thought it tarnished a great character.

I don't know about the very last movie, but I was hoping he'd be in at least *one* of the films. His remark he made in "All Good Things..." is what made me go see the TNG films (although I missed Insurrection). If they would of went to six or seven films instead of only four, I think we may have well could of seen Q in one of them.

Q was nothing but a comical relief except in the 1st and last episode, I'm happy he wasn't in Nemesis

He was more than just comic in Tapestry.

Hmmm. Ok, you twisted my arm, I'm game. Pick up the storyline of Wesley after S7, on his metaphysical journeys, crossed with the backstory of Riker's refusal of the Q powers. Use the death of Deanna Troi to retell that story in a more compelling way, and Q steps in to help/torment Wesley and Riker, and mess with Worf and Picard a bit just for fun.
Actually with this angle, we'd get Riker and Troi on the Titan, Wesley probably a civilian, maybe a passenger on the Titan or the Enterprise.
Hell, they could still do this. If only the execs would take my calls...
"You want to use the Wesley character?"
"Umm, yes."
