Also the PSN will have a movie service, and UK owners will have a dedicated iplayer icon on their XMB to access the BBC iplayer.

And firmware 3.0 will have animated background as well as other improvements.

Quite a impressive amount of announcements from Sony there.

Yes but will it play my PS2 games?

Probably not. Since the PS2 is still selling so well, they gradually dropped PS2 support from the PS3 so that the PS3 wouldn't cannibalize PS2 sales.

$300 seems downright reasonable. Spend another $100 on your PS2 and you've got the best of both worlds. :)

Amazon has already dropped the price on their website.

Seriously, $300 for the PS3 is a pretty good deal now.

the icon is just a shortcut to the browser page, hoping it was dedicated service. Great news about the movie service, use it on the 360 sometimes, handy to have when you want to watch a new film

A nice bit of news for consumers. I do wonder how desperate Sony is to make this move - they were reportedly losing money on every PS3 they sold even at the higher price.

Maybe the new slimmed-down version will be made more cheaply to help them reduce the losses?

That's my understanding, that they were able to signicantly reduce production costs with this new "slim" model.

You know I've been arguing for a long time that between the built-in wi-fi, and free PSN service, that the $400 PS3 still wasn't that bad a of deal. $300 is just icing on the cake to me. Of course I've had my PS3 for a long time and it doesn't make any difference to me. But maybe this will move some PS3s out the door and help motivate game developers to develop for this platform. And I see that as a good thing for all PS3 owners.

It looks like build quality was sacrificed to get the system down to that price point.

Yeah I think I like the materials and stuff of the fat more. It had that nice glossy yet somewhat see through case. That said, I like how the slim looks so...not bulky lol
