Proposed TNG animated series?

While reading the Q&A section at Curt Danhauser's Guide to Animated Star Trek, I came across this question and answer duo:

Was there ever a proposed animated STAR TREK: The Next Generation series?

ANSWER:

Yes, around 1990 Paramount shopped around an animated series that featured original series characters and Next Generation characters. Unfortunately no network or syndicator was interested. Some cel art from the proposed show has turned up for sale at conventions, and the art is reportedly of very good quality. Rick Berman has also been quoted on the subject, saying that an animated Next Generation series would have "diluted the franchise."

I had never heard of this proposed series and would very much like to see any of the art that supposedly has shown up at conventions. Anyone have some? Anyone have more information on this?

What I really find weird is the idea that the series would feature characters from TOS and TNG. What would the logic for that have been?

Transporter stasis? Just becoming really, really old? The Nexus?

^It probably would have been alternating TOS and TNG stories.

Am I the only who finds it ironic that the man who gave usEnterprise and Nemesis and the last three years of Voyager was worried aboutt he dilution of the franchise?

The only TNG animation art I've seen featured Picard in the ST: First Contact uniform, so obviously that's more recent than 1990, and probably fan-created.

Berman was always concerned about diluting the franchise. He wanted a one year break between Voyager and Enterprise. He however stayed on and did what the bosseswanted because how many people voluntarily give up a job they like and get paid handsomely for?

And, to be fair to Berman, he didn't want Voyager, period. But he was told by Paramount that UPN was going to launch with a Trek series at the helm... whether or not he had anything to do with it. He bit the bullet.

Anyway, an alternating show sounds bizarre. It'd be like two different shows.

In case anyone didn't know, you can see Stewart, Dorn, Frakes and Sirtis voicing their cartoon characters in a couple of Family Guy clips (look on YouTube). As well as one DS9 one featuring Rene and Armin (if I recall).

And, of course, Patrick Stewart is a regular character in American Dad, looking pretty much exactly like himself, and in command of a military group (very Picard-ish).

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Family Guy. I think American Dad is better though.

If there gonna do an animated TNG series, do it without the TOS characters.

Maybe it would be like Garfield & Friends, with both Garfield and U.S. Acres segments.

This is true.

Someone who worked on several of the Trek shows once told me, "the suits come to Rick about once a week with a really stupid idea for Trek, and about once a week he tells them no."

Yeah, a TNG cartoon featuring child versions of all the cast like in "Rascals"---noooooooo!

Continuing the story from Nemesis in anime would be a potentially very cool thing...

Well... "Codename: Kids Next Door" crew bears some resemblances with TNG and TOS.

Tho' the episode stories are certainly on par with Enterprise.
