Proof of Address

Boomstick

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Bit of background:
I'm originally from the UK but I've been living in Milan this past year, and in September I will be moving to Stockholm to study for a Masters.
It's the summer holidays for the schools in Milan now and, because I was teaching, my income has dried up.
So I have returned to the UK to try to find temporary work over the summer. I am trying to sign up with job agencies to help me find work and they are all asking for two forms of proof of address. I have changed my bank statements to reflect where I am now, but I have no idea how to get a second form of proof quickly. I'm living with my mother over the next few weeks, and I've only been back for about 20 hours, so I have no bills, and won't have any bills, in my name.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to get proof of address quickly?
Cheers in advance.

Any driving licenses, mobile phone bills?

Do you have any historic proofs of address from before your year in Italy?

dJE

I've asked and mobile phone bills don't count for whatever reason.
Driving license was issued nine years ago, I've had at least nine addresses since then.
I have plenty of historic proofs of address, but from up and down the country. Everything they want needs to be dated within the last three months. Genuinely at a loss. I'm hoping I can get my mam to sign something to say I am actually at this address. I'm only here a few weeks before leaving again, it seems such a daft hurdle to get a bit of work when I've got the right to work/passport/proof of national insurance.

Mobile phone bills are obvious really, they want something that's tied to the address.

This may sound a defeatist question, but if you're only there for a few weeks will the agency be able to process your application, get you in work and earning before you leave?

Deleted - sorry, didn't catch that your first bit was the bank statement.

I know what you're saying about the mobile phone bill, but they accept a bank statement, and all I had to do was go online, type in another address and immediately had a pdf bank statement with the new address, hardly foolproof if someone were to be dishonest.

Yeah , I've worked really quick temp roles through this agency before, albeit in a different branch. I've basically got the job in the bag, theoretically starting monday, it's just this last formality.

Just to clarify, I will be in this city for three months, I just won't be living at mother's that amount of time, and I want to work and can't really wait a few weeks to move and then another however long to get my first bill elsewhere.

Get your Mum to write you a note.
I'm hoping I'll be able to this, I'll have to ask when the agency opens tomorrow.

It's seems so weird to be getting a note from my mother, it's been about 20 years since I needed to get out of PE but didn't have the nerve to just skive.

Could you join a local library and get them send you membership paperwork through the post?
Good idea, I'll look into this. The post is a pain though, but if it has to be done.
My membership from when I was a child may still exist.

Can't you just update the address on your card? You could probably get a temporary card with the updated address on short-notice. Or is the license now invalid and would therefore require you to pass the drivers' test again?

Do you have a credit card account from a different bank?

I believe another option in the UK is to get a statement of account from HM Revenue & Customs. It looks like you can get a lot done online:

As long as the day you write the application has the relevant reference to a residential address it won't matter if you move later. Will you have to pay tax? I wonder if you update your tax or electoral information that will count. (I'm not a driver so when I have to have proof of address I have difficulty too in the sense I need a bill or bank account to carry with me too. AND proof of age which is getting beyond embarrassing).

If you give a false address to open a bank account you're generally committing a pretty serious crime. I'm surprised your bank would give you a statement so quickly, wouldn't you get your pdf after your statement cycles?

Can you get a voter registration card? Oh dear but you might need proof of address to get that? Your mother's note might really work, if you have like your birth certificate and proof of her address?

I'm so sorry you're going through such stress, I do hope your employment works out!

Yeah, it is a pretty serious crime. I've had the account over ten years now, but I genuinely just logged in, put in my new postcode, and within 2 minutes had a pdf displaying the new address. At my bank you can request a statement for any time period if you don't want to wait for the cycle, or if you want a historic one, or even one just displaying a day, a week, two weeks of activity etc, and because I have a green account a never get a physical copy of anything from them.

I will be paying tax. The issue with the electoral register is that they would send me a letter by post as opposed to something electronic, which would be second class mail and I've no idea when it would arrive.
I understand it wont matter if I move after the fact, I just can't prove my address right now as I've been back in the country less than a day. What I meant to express by explaining the brevity of my stay at this address was that since I am here for such a short period of time I will not be putting my name on any of the bills (which would be appropriate proof of address) because I can hand over the cash to my mother, and as she receives everything quarterly there won't be one arriving for eight weeks or something.

I'm leaning towards the note. I think it will probably work. I'm just stressing a bit because It's 10pm here and I can't just ask the agency up front until the morning, so I'm trying to cover all bases before tomorrow. I'm sure the note will work, I was working legally at 16 and, although I can't remember, I presumably had little in the way of proof of address then. And people who live in shelters and halfway houses must surely have to just have someone vouching for them too.

Thanks for the support guys!

Just an FYI, but technically you're supposed to keep the address on your driving license up-to-date (otherwise how can they send you speeding fines!).
It's an online process these days, so I'd at least try updating it, then generating your code thingie which will probably get you your proof of address....

It's a £1000 fine, if your driving license doesn't show your current address.

Cheers for the concern guys, but it's only a provisional and I've never even been behind the wheel. I bought it years ago to prove I could buy alcohol.

haha, gotta love that irony.

Could still be an easy way to get yourself another proof of address, though.
