The network only cares about the ratings, which is why sometimes a so-so contestant (on any of these kinds of shows) stays while a better one goes. Contestants bringing personality or conflict often stay longer than they should (see: Ivy--she stayed longer than her designs warranted, but she was good for the camera). There’s usually a disclaimer about the judging standards at the end of the show, stating what goes into the decision-making process, and that it’s not limited to the visible judges.
I think someone higher up liked Gretchen (for whatever reason)--Tim Gunn has been pretty clear all along about this season’s judging being “off.” Once the season is over, the fans wanting Mondo to win aren’t so interested anymore, but wait for the next season to cheer someone new on. So the network loses nothing by ignoring them as long as the selection wasn’t TOO egregious. It wasn’t; Gretchen was honestly among the best overall--but Mondo was better overall.
