Project: Blackhawk / NX-971 concept

Another work-in-progress is a retro-design of my TMP-era Wasp interceptor. Again, crudely done in Sketchup, I'm exploring the hull shape and configuration of a 2260's-era one-off design as a stealthy, high-speed reconnaissance ship. The NX-971 is simply codenamed "Blackhawk", about half the size of a standard cruiser with minimal crew. This will be built as a physical 1/350 scale model.

The retro-design:

Oh my. The way the nacelle's curve bleeds into the pylon in that side view is drool worthy. And it actually looks like a wasp in that 3/4 front view. Awesome design!

Looks a little like the Wasp/Blackhawk designs could be descended from the ENT-era NX- and Intrepid-style ships.

Neat design and potential evolutionary link.

The later movie era version reminds me of a set of blueprints I used to have, of a ship that hosted two-pilot fighters. The hexagons on the sides are where the fighters would dock with it. It had been designed to go after Orion raiders that were hiding in an asteroid field.

Yes, the Wasp is a updated redesign of the Hornet as produced in blueprints by Larry Miller back in 1985. The hexagon are indeed the docking ports for fighter craft.

AdmiralBuck, I hope you don't mind but I mangled the images in MSpaint to suggest a possible alternative of making the webbing from the saucer to the secondary hull smaller and therefore bringing the two closer together. It's obviously much less of a predecessor to the Wasp class visually but I wanted to see what you thought of the idea.

Thanks Sitz! I'm not crazy about it but it's definitely a secondary alternative. The original idea to create a webbed connection without adjoining the major hull components. There is plenty of room to bring the main sensor pod closer to the primary without connecting them, using the Hoffmeister Kink curve to sweep the web.

Thanks for considering it. I look forward to seeing what you do with this. Have you thought about what dimesions roughly the ship will have and it's size scale in comparison to the rest of your fleet?

The more I look at it, the more I like the Repulse as a MUCH better alternative to the Ares. It makes a lot more sense, design-wise...
