Problems with firewire HDD... (loud clicking noise, sounds bad)

Deimos Anomaly

I have a Maxtor 160gb external drive which I've had for maybe 3 years or so... well something seems to be the matter with it.

Over the past few days it seems to have gone into a cycle sometimes of making a loud clicking sound, several times in a row.

Previously it often made this sound once when starting up, and maybe once in a blue moon during operation. But it started happening like maybe 10 or 20 times in a row, maybe 5 or 10 seconds apart.

And just tonight it totally went berserk, twice in the space of a couple of minutes, it started doing the clicking noise repeatedly, mechanically and with no break... one or two clicks per second, and for maybe 20 seconds at a time.

Strangely it does not seem to have lost any data, even though it sounds like something is badly wrong inside it.

I've switched it off now in case it does die a death and takes the data with it. I've got about 70gb of stuff on there and I don't want to lose it all.

Any idea what could be wrong with it?

Most likely the read/write head arm banging back an forth treyingto read the dirve,

Most likely the read/write head arm banging back an forth trying to read the drive, you should be looking of a replacement very soon.

^I agree. Back it up now and do not store anything further on it. The hard disk is failing.

Put the drive in the freezer for six hours before backing it up.

Seriously.

It WILL make it last longer.

But put it in a zip-lock plastic bag so no water condenses on the surface of the drive when you take it out of the freezer.

This sounds like a head crash with impending complete failure. Back up your data right now.

Yup, your drive is on it's last legs, You shouldn't use it again until you are ready to copy all the contents to another drive.

Thanks for the advice people.

Well, yesterday I got the lend of another drive and backed up my own apparently dying drive to a folder there.

I'm now looking to get a new drive to replace it. I had thought of going for another maxtor since i thought they were a good name, but on doing a look around it turns out a lot of people seem to be saying that maxtors fail a lot, don't touch them with a barge pole etc... so I may get a seagate or western digital or samsung or something.

What would you people recommend for a new external HDD?

Over the last few years I've had two external drives I've used for backup purposes fail on me. The internal drive that they're backing up, meanwhile, continues to hum along nicely with no problems at all.

It's like the universe is laughing at you, isn't it...? :D

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Go (with the FW800 interface and dock) which I've been very pleased with. I've not had it all that long though so I can't say much about reliability other than that it came with a 5 year warranty as standard.

The Seagates get reasonably good reviews from what I've seen.

If you want to spend the cash on something that's really worth it and will keep your data safe, get a Drobo.
