Let's talk about how to have privacy.
"Privacy is a thing of the past," you say.
Not quite.
There are a number of subtopics of privacy the largest issue these days is online privacy.
If you are now serious about now protecting your privacy and living a more anonymous & low profile lifestyle here are some things I would highly recommend to you.
Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Friendster, hi5, Orkut, PerfSpot, Yahoo! 360, Zorpia , Netlog, blackplanet are all Social Networking Websites that you can live without. Yes just cancel your account.
If I've upset you or turned you off already there are other options that you can do.
You may absolutely refuse to cancel your social networking account. Firstly use the privacy settings on each Internet social network account then read these 6 Books:
"How To Be Invisible
The essential guide to protecting your personal privacy, your assets and
your life" by J.J. Luna
http://www.amazon.com/How-Be-Invisi...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233114735&sr=1-1
H.T.B.I. is like the bible for privacy seekers.
"Privacy Crisis; Identity Theft Prevention Plan and Guide to Anonymous
Living" by Grant Hall
The Hardbound edition of this book has sold out ; it is currently out of print. Only a few
copies are available at Amazon.com and at a few online sources. Going forward, the e-book will be the only version of the book available.

"How to Disapear"
by Frank M. Ahearn and Eileen C. Horan
http://www.frankahearn.com/howtodisappearbook.html
the hardcover is out of print and now only available via E-Book for the price ($19.99)
I read it (E-Book) and think it's worth it, especially if trying to avoid a current stalker.
We are talking long term overall privacy not just 6 months or less but this book has some ideas but I think it has very specific ideas for protection from a real stalker.

Privacy is still important and it is not just a setting on a website. While your anonymity may be compromised quite often just by day to day life you can still have privacy. Those who have read one or more of the above books know that there are levels of privacy (categorized by J.J. Luna in "H.T.B.I." book as levels 1 thru 4 with a '3' being what the D.O.J. & U.S. Attorney Gen. do with the federal Witness Protection Program (also known as the 'Witness Security Program') and a '4' is illegal to carry out yourself.
Most people do not need beyond level 1 or 2 privacy.
Something you can do right away is change all of your computer passwords to 15-character passwords using a combination of letters, numbers, and extra characters.
You don't need to use encryption with e-mail but you can have a more secure way to get your e-mail with a full SSL session for webmail.
Most of TrekBBS users are in the United States so laws are different in other countries. We shall focus on the U.S.A.
This is with the idea of an upstanding citizen of the US who just wants to get & keep their privacy. And in keeping with TrekBBS Rules no discussion of anything illegal.
So let's explore privacy tactics and strategy in a discussion.
