Prime Directive (spoiler for novel)

There's an interview somewhere with Orci and Kurtzman in which one of them claims that the Reeves-Stevens novel Prime Directive was a source for some of the characters. I just reread the novel, and it does give some insight into the movie. It explicitly states Vulcans have emotions, and it highlights Kirk's adaptability and skill - as well as the skill of the other crew members. The plot, involving disparate crew members coming together to regain their posts, has very slight echoes of the movie's. I do think the first chapter of the novel is well-worth reading for its insight into Kirk, in particular.

yes, they said they were influenced by that one and Best Destiny. Prime Directive is one of the more emotional trek novels I've read. and one of the very best. the Reeves-Stevens pairing is pretty dynamite, IMO.

yeah, I've often thought that over the last few years. but I guess it never happened. it'd have been awesome as a movie.

can you imagine the opening?! the Kelvin opening scenes would be nothing to that.

Unfortunately I've never been able to make it through that novel, but the first time I tried to read it I was 8.
