What is it other than six guys/gals in a ship exploring the universe with some recurring Humanoid villians. When you boil it down from wagon train to the stars boldly going. Can it be defined any better or more specifically than that? Most people don't think it needs to. Is that enough of a setup or backstory or is it played out, exhausted? or would anything else really matter compared to that awesomely complexi universe in itself. SW paired up mythology/mysicism with politics. 2001 had a central over arching mystery which can never be explained fully. Is 'Let's see what's out there.' enough of a mission statement objective. For me it seems like the center is in danger of not holding. What if say the Vulcans were an imaginary race, with the Klingons and Romulans too?

Just a couple of questions. If there was a centralized mystery in Star Trek, what would you like it to be? Vulcans/Romulans? the Federation, the Klingons, or something/one else?
Also, Kirk in TOS referred to something that if he didn't know any better would seem like someone's idea of an elaborate practical joke. Does anyone know or remember where this is from, ep or eps? obscure trivia for sure, but it seemed to me Kirk always had that that surreal feeling. I think he said once if I had time I'd laugh.

It didn't even involve metaphorical wagons! A wagon train is a bunch of emigrants going somewhere to settle. Star Trek wasn't about people journeying to a particular place so they could settle there. It was about the cavalry patrolling the wagon trails and exploring the wilderness, just going back and forth and zigzagging around, no particular destination in mind.
"Wagon Train to the Stars" is BS Roddenberry used to get his show greenlit by nervous suits.
Star Trek's true premise is that humanity will survive to explore the stars only if everyone starts thinking and behaving like they should, namely like liberal Americans of the 1960s.
