Prejudice and The Katric Ark.

it wasn't as blatant. besides, exactly what was taken from what book pre-ST09?

oh and how long are we gonna argue about this? ;)

Hikaru Sulu is from the books. Might be other stuff too. Dont really keep track. Things from the non-canon TAS have popped up, like the City of ShiKahr in Enterprise and TOS-R. As fans have become pros its become more common. Didn't start with ST09. Its not a new thing or a change in the "rules".

How long? Dunno. I gotta lot of free time these days.

you don't have much there do ya? :p either way, none of that was admitted. TAS was de-canonized by Roddenberry, sure, but it was never the same as the books. I'm still trying to find that article. it was there, trust me. I'll find it.

s'okay... we'll take it easy. no hurry. ;)

By my count, only slightly less than the book stuff popping up in ST09. Its not like the entire film was based on book derived elements. Uhura's name and Kirk's parents names are about it.

Non-canon is non canon: TAS, books, fanfic, tech manuals, interviews. what have you. "It dont mean a thing, if it aint on the screen" is still the rule.

your examples are, IMO, decidedly insubstantial. First names etc... not much to go on. I'm gonna try to find that article in which Kurtzman and Orci talk about delving into the zeitgeist of the novels and how, to them, many of them form the meat and bones of the Trek phenomena. none of the writers of pre-ST09 films and even TV actually ADMITTED this. none of whatever they "borrowed" was acknowledged by them to the extent K&O did in that article.

we need to stop the black and white portrayal of what "canon" means right now. like I said earlier, the gray area is spreading. you can even see it in the four new ST09 universe books coming out this summer, especially the one by Greg Cox. I wouldn't bet against substantial give and take in the future to the likes never attempted before.

Your claim is that the rules have changed regarding what is canon. So you need to produce a quote that supports that. That K&O have read the novels and that has influenced what they include in their scripts doesn't change the rules but in place by people at Paramount and CBS. Because those are the peolple who make the rules regarding canon, not writers, directors and producers.

I'm pretty sure that Greg Cox would be the last person to think his book is canon or has contributed to a widening gray area concerning canon.

I don't see how anything has changed after XI concerning what is canon.
As always if it's on the big or small screen it's canon.

Even if at some point they choose to directly adapt a whole book to a movie, that book will still not be canon since it will almost definitely have differences from what we will see on screen.
Even the movie novelizations are not canon and have often many differences from the movies themselves.

And it's for the better. The last thing we need is adding books into the canon mix and having even greater lame internet fights over that.

Also, what does canon and books have to do with Prejudice and The Katric Ark ?:p

IIRC it was from an tangent about the way Vulcans' psychic powers were presented in the books and using that to support an opinion.

nobody got my yellow submarine reference :( I know, I'm lame. so sue me.

I did! But Andorians and Bolians (the unnecesary, poor man's TNG Andorians) are already blue.

Mind you, didn't TAS have Orions who were blue? Maybe in the sequel we can have some genuine blue meanies. :bolian:

true, or it could be a Monkees tribute? :p

maybe The Apple was sort of a nod to flower power? kinda general. I just can't think of any right now.
