Predict where Star Trek will place this weekend

Norrin Radd

Vice Admiral
Two major flicks are coming out: Pixar's "Up" and Sam Raimi's "Drag me to Hell".

What scares me is that Star Trek could be pushed to fifth this weekend if both of those two grab the top five.

In fact, it seems likely that it may.

I don't know... Terminator is on a free fall... this MONDAY Natm2 had 15 Mil, Terminator 9 mil and star trek 6.2 mil.... star trek might edge out terminator!

I think Terminator and Trek will fight it out for 4th place.

Terminator will likely drop somewhere around 65-70%, down to $13-15 million. Trek could drop somewhere around 40% to around $13-14 million.

Is Drag Me to Hell is a major release? Yeah, I know it's Sam "Spider-Man" Rami, but I until a few weeks ago I'd never even heard of this movie. And I've yet to see a trailer or TV commercial.

PG-13 horror movies do really well, and DMTH looks unique compared to all the horror remakes (which are also pretty successful in their own right). The reviews have been good (RT - 100% after 18 reviews), especially for a horror movie. It should open with at least $22-25 million in 2400 theatres.

Here is a fresh review that came up today -- from one of the geeks at Texas Tech:

New Star Trek film surprisingly satisfying

And yet it's still only 95% at RT! :(

Same as Drag me to Hell, by the way...

So you have Up (no abbreviation necessary), NatM2, TS4, DmtH, and ST.

I think it'll shake out as follows:

1. Up
2. NatM2
3. DmtH
4. TS4
5. Trek

Just don't know if enough time will have gone by for Trek to supplant TS4. But DmtH's good reviews so far and its newness give it a chance to bump TS4.

Best you can hope for over the coming week or two is TS4 doing an A&D.

But I also think these horror flicks are unpredictable. Sometimes they do really well and other times not too much. I think Drag Me is a real wildcard.

It'll be fourth. But more importantly, it will go beyong the $200 million mark in the U.S. When it's all over, I wouldn't be surprised to see it outgross everything that's at least been out so far, except for Up.

it looks like shite.

I can't believe it's 95% at RT.

I'm not a horror fan at all, but Drag Me to Hell looks kinda interesting and different.

I eschewed horror -- until X-Files made me like it.

If it's amusing, it can be good. And the critics say it's funny.

I love horror.

hmm. I dunno. I might take a look at this one... after all, it's the Evil Dead guy.
