spells Pottermore...

which is a twitter account and a website...

What happened to her writing some other fiction?

Well, after the 7th book she said that she would write a children's book (IIRC, a "political fairy tale" aimed at little children, under a different pen name), and that she would work on a HP encyclopedia containing everything (family trees, spells, etc).

I am hoping that the announcement will be that last one, a reference book to the Potter universe.

It seems that these http://harrypotterreviews.wordpress.com/2011/06/15/pottermore-preview/ maybe pics taken by one of the sites that preview it.

Would love to see that reference book, and wouldn't mind small bits of new fiction in it to fill in some of the gaps in the books.

I'd like to get my hands on that Encyclopedia she has promised and prevented that one publishing company/fan (I don't remember which now) from putting out.

The Lexicon I think you mean. It was released, after the author removed a lot of the direct quotes from the books, and avoided using other fans' essays without their permission.

Probably just the PR workup for finally releasing the Harry Potter books as E-Books, including "magic" features like background info, interviews, essays and other assorted information.

The E-Reader platform can be for Books, what DVDs were to VHS.

Special Features out the ying-yang.

Pottermore

JK Rowling will reportedly offer free new content to fans on her new Pottermore website, ahead of the digital release of the Harry Potter series later this year.

The launch of Pottermore was teased last week when ten Harry Potter fansites were given coordinates for a special map, which allowed fans to find the letters to create the project's title.

A website announcing that news was 'Coming Soon' was revealed, while a YouTube channel called 'JK Rowing Announces' was created, using the tagline 'The owls are gathering'.

BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones confirmed the details on Twitter as he attended a launch.

"So Pottermore is a site with new JK Rowling content free for users - then there'll be paid eBooks in autumn," he wrote, adding: "Sorry - you can't launch a product for the digital generation in front of cameras and journalists - and tell them it's embargoed."

It was claimed that the website will be a "sophisticated" online Harry Potter game, after details were revealed in in a leaked document yesterday.

The best-selling series began in 1997 with the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. This was followed by the release of six more novels, with the final breaking global records when it was published in July 2007.

While it had been confirmed that Pottermore was not a new book, Rowling previously revealed that she is "writing hard" and working on "several things".

What happened to her writing some other fiction?
Guess she decides to go back to milking that Potter cashcow until it starts lactating blood.

She is writing other fiction. I find your attitude curious. I haven't read any of her books and only discovered the films last year but even I can see that the world she invented and the characters that populate it wasn't created without effort or talent. Just because her books are a global phenomenon doen't mean they must be contemptible, surely?

Well, 30 seconds to the entirely unsurprising announcement. I love the spoiled world of the internet. Nothing's a surprise.

In essence, it seems it will be an official fanfic archive. I'm assuming the 'safe' part means no Snape/Hermione or Malfoy/Sorting Hat will make it on.

JK Rowling reignites DRM debate

One of the boldest parts of JK Rowling's strategy to self-publish her Harry Potter e-books is the associated lack of DRM and how it has forced e-book retailers to fulfil sales of her book for no commission.

Although Rowling is selling her e-books via her own ecommerce site, she wants to ensure that people can enjoy them on whatever device they have -- be it a Kindle, an iPad, a Sony Reader or a Nook. As such she is opting to digitally watermark her e-books as opposed to encrypting them with strict DRM.
