Post nBSG sci-fi sex and Star Trek

Separate from the question of how to physically depict sex, I always thought that the sex and relationships depicted in most of TNG, VOY, ENT, and, to a lesser extent, DS9, were deeply immature and unrealistic. It tended to be more about titillation than the various real manifestations of human sexuality, and most of the characters seemed to have the emotional maturity of a blueberry scone.

Trek's tendencey to use the reset button has generally mitigated against long term relationships and some of those that did develop between principle characters were often forced, unrealistic, or just downright unnatural. I realise that Trek's allegorical roots leads all the aliens to share 'human' values and thus inter-racial relationships end up all over the shop. I'm firmly in the camp that just because something is anatomically possible doesn't make it right (I mean horny dolphins often want to have sex with humans but eeewwww).

I think Buffy handled realtionships correctly, interspersing them as additions to the main plots, with beginnings, middles, and ends spread over one or two seasons. BSG less so as almost none of the relationships were healthy and happy. It will be interesting to see how Stargate Universe handles the issue.

I've said it before but it still bears repeating. There were soulmates in BSG, which you very rarely see in science fiction. Fluffy happiness would be jarring in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Its about taste and maturity I think. And for me sexy is far better than sex.

The suggestion of sex is, in drama, far more effective than a display of it. And in the case of drama, its usually a point of plot or character to show is the meaning, value or relevance of the act rather than the act itself. There's usually some politics involved in the sex act, some ulterior motive, blackmail, revenge et al. Even if its just the characters blowing off steam, this is best represented by the actors after act, rather than during it.

Nudity is totally different matter, by all means, have them fully naked on the bed after the act, whatever, thats fine but theres nothing titilating about watching others have sex and its only marginally more tasteful than showing an actor wipe their arse.

Porn is a separate though. Theres always room porn ;-)

I don't know. Body Heat was pretty well done for actors. But then again, William Hurt seems to be good at realistic sex since he was convincing in Gorky Park too. I guess some actors are just good at it.

Yeppers.

I'll be on Delta IV.

Yeah, like I said whenever the possibility of sex was depicted it was purely a tacked-on contrivance to appeal to the lower denominator audience. Not as a logical, natural action for any of the characters or the plot. Some of DS9 did it better but not that much better.

Well, except maybe for the Picard/Vash stuff. That was done mostly well.
