Possibly considering a new router. Suggestions appreciated.

I'm planning on going to a QWEST kiosk at my local mall.

I want to lower my bill a bit by not renting their router anymore.

I'm looking for any suggestions on what would be a better router than their Actiontec pk5000 I current rent.

Also am I limited to just these routers offered by QWEST?

I don't know anything about QWEST, but why are you limited to those routers? I bought my Netgear router for $25 at Walmart 4 years ago, and it still works like a charm.

EDIT: Oh wait, I just looked at the link. You linked to a page of modems, but you're talking about routers. They're not the same thing.

Ah. Well, I dunno. I don't know anything about this company. When I had AT&T DSL last year, they gave me a Motorola modem, which seemed to work fine.

OK, you can buy your own modem if you like, but if you don't get a combo modem/router you'll need to get a router, too. ActionTec makes good modems but their wireless technology leaves something to be desired. I recommend getting just a plain ActionTec modem and then a Linksys wireless router.

Keep in mind if you're going to use your own modem you need to know exactly how to set it up to work with Qwest's network. They should have such information available but make sure you have it before you get started!

Personally, I like that I'm renting my current router. It costs more than 200€ new and the rent is 4€ a month. That's going to be a long time before it pays to buy new and I can just cancel this one and get a new/better one later on.

Of course, if your router sucks/the rent is too high, you're probably right to buy one.

As for suggestions, it would probably be a good idea to compose a list of features you'd like to have. Such as if you want it to support 802.11n, gigabit LAN, what kind of throughput and number of connections it can handle, etc.
