Spoilers Possible Spoilers: Why Picard left Starfleet and the reasons for his dreams about Data

Could it have been, because when Data was reactivated with the help of B4 he joined the rogue synths, who attacked Mars?

Maybe he is even (one of the) leader(s).

It's possible that this is the personal catastrophe that made Picard resign.

Or alternately, Data might have lost his rights because of the attack and joined them sometime after it happened.

I suspect that Picard was simply outspoken, in some way, about the use of the synth's in the first place. Depending on how Starfleet were using them (drones, or individuals, etc.), I would imagine Picard vocally campaigning for one side. If he was in favour of them, I can imagine that the attack on Mars was a political disaster for him. If he was against their use, I would think his actions following the attack likely left him exposed amongst a Starfleet senior management who were trying to do some damage control.

If Data were brought back, I feel we'd see that happen in the present day, rather than find out retrospectively. Just my own belief, on that.

The Picard Countdown comic hinted in the scenes with Geordi at the possibility of Data being alive again. But maybe i have interpreted it wrong.

You mean the unnamed new captain of the Enterprise? I assumed they were referring to Worf.

Yeah, but Data being alive again and having to play a big (and maybe surprising) part to play in the new show could be a good reason why the last issue will only be released after the show hits the screen, to not spoil the possible surprise...

In the previews, Picard explicitly notes that Data died 20 years earlier. Since the comic is being written by the same people doing the show, he's not going to turn up alive.

The idea of someone at Starfleet Command thinking "Picard warned us about this, so he has to be discredited ASAP" is...disturbing. Partly because it wouldn't be the first time, would it?

That he died, which we all know, doesn't have to mean that he won't be back. Don't forget Spock and look at how Data came back in the Novelverse or in STO...

And maybe, although it's not canon (anymore), read the Countdown comics for Abram's first Star Trek movie, which were also written by the writers of this movie, where Data is also alive again and the captain of the Enterprise-E...

Maybe i'm wrong but i think it's too early to exclude the possibility of Data being back as a big surprise.

I don't follow the novelverse, so I have no clue what happened there. What I do know is that Data was vaporized when the Scimitar blew up. Hard to come back from that.

I'm not sure Spiner would have come back for that type of role. I imagine he is in a pretty limited role as a manifestation of Picard's conscious.

A few months ago I saw a Brent Spiner interview on Youtube where he mentions Patrick Stewart called him to come back as Data for the Picard series. Before he said yes to coming back as Data he wanted a good story and and reasons for his character being brought back for a specific reason. That;s what I'm really interested in finding out when the show premieres in 2 weeks time.

That's what I think to it's just a dream when it comes to Data talking to Picard in the vinyard with the Dahj painting asking him to finish it.

Kurtzman just threw it out to the Universe in an interview, that Worf might possibly be back in one of the Seasons.

The new Countdown comic, had Romulans conquer planets, enslave the local populations and wanted the Federation to evacuate them, just leave the people they enslaved to die by the supernova. If the Federation sided with the Romulans over the people they enslaved, I can see Picard becoming disillusioned with Star Fleet.
