Deal of the century considering the stadium cost $55m in 1975 dollars to build.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- An unidentified Canadian real estate company was the winning bidder for the Silverdome, snatching it up for a mere fraction of its original value.

A Toronto-based family-owned company bid $583,000 for the under-used stadium on Monday, which is currently owned by the City of Pontiac, Mich., according to auctioneer Williams & Williams.

I know things in Detroit are bad, but didn't realize they were THAT bad. :wtf:

I realize $583k is only the start of the money that these developers will need to put into the stadium to bring it up to modern standards, but that $583k is cheaper than the average house in Southern or Northern California. Those developers got one heck of a deal if they can actually do what they want to with the stadium.

The purpose of which would be to do what exactly? The Silverdome has already been effectively superceded by Ford Field. Who do they plan to attract?

Between that and Tigers Stadium, Detroit hasn't exactly managed its old stadiums all that well. Knock them down and make way for progress.

Men's and women's soccer, according to the article.

They're going to need a lot more than that to make money on this venture, so hopefully they have some concrete plan that's a little more than "refurb it and they will come".

Well, as long as the stadium gets used for *something*, I don't see the problem here. Better to get sold for a bargain price than to have it sit there abandoned. Astrodome, anyone? :(

To put this in to persepctive, that's how much Oprah makes every 23 seconds.

Pretty shocking stuff, Detroit just sounds effed. Even the Red Wings can't sell out.
