Episode 60: Vic Mignogna and Star Trek Continues

This week we welcome Vic Mignogna to talk with us about Star Trek Continues. We start off talking about the Indiegogo and discus a bit about why it may not be doing as well as previous campaigns Star Trek Continues has done. We get the dates for Episode 6 and Episode 7 of Star Trek Continues, and we briefly touch on one of his roles in a lesser known anime Excel Saga because this is David’s favorite anime series. Star Trek Continues is a wonderful show, it is a labor of love, Vic and all the rest do fantastic work on this show. The Indiegogo campaign completes in just under two weeks. Please check out the Indiegogo for Star Trek Continues and donate so we can get more of this amazing series made my a passionate and a wonderfully talented group! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/star-trek-continues#/

It's a good interview. Dwells on the Axaclysm longer than I'm sure Vic would have preferred, but this thing is on people's minds and needs to be talked through.

Thanks Yeah I thought it would be good to get his take on it. I know it was probably discouraging to talk about. We usually try to be more upbeat. But his point of view on it to me is one of the most important ones since STC is being so negatively affected by this. Thank you for giving this a listen. Please pass it on to others I'd love to see them make their minimum goal!

Vic had all phasers primed, and this was recorded before news of Horizon broke. You could hear his frustration.

"The production that shall not be named."

Perfect.

And Vic certainly doesn't pull any punches.

Yes a Flying Chest Kick indeed! Yes this was recorded Wednesday Night the Horizon news broke Thursday Morning.

Vic's frustration is palpable. I can't deny I feel a certain sense of schadenfreude at seeing Axanar getting their just desserts, but it's depressing to hear how this has negatively affected other parties whose intentions were much purer than Peters'. I've never thought about donating to a fan production before, but now that I actually have a little money in the bank for once, I've been seriously considering donating to Continues' indiegogo campaign. I have to admit, I'm a bit more skittish since the news about the Horizon sequel broke, however. Before then,it was easier to view Axanar as a one time thing. Well, if I don't read anything about Paramount or CBS telling Continues to shut it down in the next ten days or so, maybe I'll risk chipping in a few bucks.

I wish I knew what was going on in CBS Legal's mind with the Horizon shutdown, but maybe it's brand confusion - the theory that a new independent film with modern production values could be mistaken for an official new Star Trek project. Shutting down productions of that nature could reinforce their claim against Axanar while still leaving a safe space for fan films of the "retro" kind like STC and NV to keep paying tribute. A hopeful view, but a possibility.

First, I don't think it's CBS's legal term, but rather an outside firm hired for the Axanar case. And they were probably thinking that if they let Horizon / Federation Rising slide by, it could weaken their case against Axanar. At the very least, Axanar's pro-bono lawyers would ask about it and force them to explain it to the judge. Why allow the distraction to occur when it's easily avoided?

Well, that's what I'm getting at, but in particular because it's a modern-looking, Axanar-ish production as opposed to a retro-looking homage to the past. I do suspect CBS would rather let the pure tribute films keep operating if possible.

And Tommy Kraft did say it was CBS Legal that prompted CBS Marketing to call him, but surely their internal lawyers are working closely with outside counsel on this.

Just a hunch but I think it had more to do with the 250K Kickstarter to make a Star Trek project than the actual project. STC is lucky to have started theirs when they did (even if it is under performing). It maybe the end of large Kickstarter/Indiegogo or at the very least a time to lay low for the dust to clear. Stay away from the blast radius for awhile.

Of course I have no idea whom Vic may have talked to at CBS, now or in the past, but it's hard to imagine he's just passively waiting and praying that the phone doesn't ring. I guess stranger things have happened, though.
