Plotline problems

To what extent can Human writers conceive of alien cultures that are not like some Human group, when that's their frame of reference? Or, for that matter, unlike any animal we know of?

It's VERY hard, and rarely is it even tried seriously, but that's at the core of what SF is supposed to be about, straining imagination THAT far, while staying grounded in the possible. What if some maker of new Trek were to decide to take this challenge on?!

I think Trek has taken a good stab at showing non-humanoids.

TOS alone has the Horta, Medusans, the Companion and similar cloud/energy creatures, the Tholians and whatever the hell Korob and Sylvia were, and that's not including solar-system sized space amoeba.

I would love for Trek to do a live-action version of a "The Magicks of Megas Two" type story, but with the Cthulhu Mythos.
