PlentyOfFish hacked, 30M records stolen

I think some people here use this site, so you might want to be aware that it has been hacked and about 30 million users' records were stolen. I have an account there that I haven't touched in some time, and I used a throwaway password for it. I would suggest that if you were a user of that site, if you used the same password anywhere else you should probably change it ASAP on those sites.

"The perils of shitty security" is more accurate. They stored people's passwords in plain text, for crying out loud.

I'm not particularly surprised. This is a site which would include your password in every new matches email as a "reminder".

 Yeah, the guy running the site may have meant well but he didn't (and still doesn't, apparently) know decent security from a hole in the ground.

According to the rambling and blame dodging blog that PoF's owner put up, only 345 accounts were stolen so the whole +30m database wasn't copied off. The blog post is also a pretty awesome conspiracy theory though.

Okay... I was wondering why I was forced to change my password the other day. The only thing that's private anyway is my income level...

Only one of about a billion reasons why I would never do internet dating.

It's not that bad. I am sort of glad that they do send you your password as I had forgotten what I used with it. Good thing it was a throw away password.
