You should take a minute to read my story and thank the moderators here because they do a good job, but it is probably a thankless one.

Several months ago I stopped logging in or reading at another Star Trek forum; StarTrek.com's forums which were moderated by CBS, I left because at that forum, tragically, the flaimers and bullies had taken over, I saw very rude comments, shameless and cruel humor directed between members, and out-right hate. Things at that forum were out of control, and why? Because the original moderators were replaced when the whole staff of StarTrek.com was fired over a year ago by CBS and the new moderators didn't see the need control the forums as much as the previous staff did. I was a long time member of StarTrek.com's forums, I new people their who were smart, sophisticated, fun, and good to exchange posts with, many of those people are still their, some like me have left.

So a few months ago I started looking for a new Trek forum and fortunately I discovered TrekBBS.com. This forum has far more members than StarTrek.com's forums which impressed me, the atmosphere here is more like what StarTrek.com used to be, with good posts, intelligent members, good topics, generally this is a fun place to spend a little time at from day to day.

Does my story surprise you? Is it too hard to believe it? The point I have been trying to make is that the moderators here do a good job a keep things under control and I have come to appreciate that because sadly Trekkers/Trekkies are just as human as anyone else and when left unchecked can lose control of what they say and do. I must say that I am no longer as naive as I once thought we were, had always seen Trekkers/Trekkies as people who were a little more enlightened than the average person. There are still plenty of decent people who are Star Trek fan's and I am still going to enjoy Star Trek, I will still hope that the number of its fans continue to grow in number with the new films coming out, with people being introduced to all the Star Trek stories that have been told, good and bad. However I will now remember that Star Trek may be special to me, but it is just entertainment, and we are all still imperfect beings, who need a little help from each other so we don't lose control. Thank your local moderator because they make the experience here a good one.

I love the Trek BBS. And the mods are one of the reasons I do.

I left more than a few months ago and never realized that the StarTrek.com forum ever had moderators that looked at posts. A few people with 50K+ posts, most of which were antagonizing, really ruined the forum. They should up here occasionally under various names, but moderators here are much better. They do a good job walking that fine line between too much moderation and letting things get out of hand.

TrekBBS is a great forum to spend some time at, and it wouldn't be that way without the moderators. So I wish to add my thanks to the thread.

This has really turned into my favorite forum in the past couple of years. For the most part they do good work here.

They do a good job. Sometimes I think perhaps overzealously, but that's probably just because my background is from smaller boards where ad hominem attacks are encouraged and the weak are culled, or at least made to look foolish.

So what if I looked foolish, it was fun.

But, seriously, they're good. The atmosphere here is what it should be. If I feel the need to call someone a son of a bitch, I have other places to go. This board's for nerding-out in a supportive environment.

A sentiment I heartily agree with, they do an excellent job of letting the atmosphere of the forum develop without stifling it, yet still making sure it doesn't burn itself out. A heartily thank you from me at the very least

Having never experienced Startrek.com's forums, I have no idea.

I've felt welcomed here since the moment I arrived. I wouldn't have stayed for so long if I hadn't.

I'm not as senior a member as a bunch of folks here, but it isn't premature for me to say cheers to the moderating staff who, as I have seen thusfar, do a great job at maintaining a clean and orderly board.

The OP also said something about Trek fans being a little more enlightened. I'll back that up. Surely, there are new fans who saw a movie or two and don't get the big picture; there are also a number of people who like Star Trek for whatever reason and yet somehow miss the whole part about humanity bettering itself. Nevertheless, I think it only fair to say - on behalf of the many dedicated Star Trek loyalists here and around the world - that the concept of Star Trek meaning more than mere entertainment isn't just an urban legend, nor is it an ending tradition.

Simply put, you can't love Star Trek if you don't support what it stands for. Every Trek episode or film ever produced - whether corny, preachy, or just plain lame - has driven home the same message; nobler deeds, higher thoughts, greater achievements... and having personally met people who can assert that Star Trek changed their lives for the better, it would be a shame to let a few roudies or trolls dampen that vision.

And so, to the moderators, peace, and long life.
