Please help identify a TV episode

It was an old western, black and white, and a girl is burning up with fever, so an Indian takes her out and dunks her in a water trough, saving her life, but he's shot in the process. I can not remember the show or title of the episode, and it was really good. I'd love to see it again. Does this ring any bells for anyone? Thanks!

It rings a bell with me. My first thought would be an episode of "Gunsmoke", though for the life of me I can't recall many episodes of that show featuring stories concerning Indians.

^Just the other day I saw a clip of a Gunsmoke episode featuring Leonard Nimoy as an Indian, but I doubt it was the one described here. For that matter, the page also had a clip of James Doohan in a Gunsmoke episode, playing a thug harassing a man for marrying an Indian woman. So if two out of two Gunsmoke clips selected for a different reason both happened to have Indian characters in them, it suggests the show did have a number of stories involving Indians.

By the time you saw all 20 years worth of episodes, you would forget why you started watching.

Never been particularly a fan, myself. My Dad loves "Gunsmoke" and watched it religiously when I was a kid. I saw (or half-saw) God knows how many episodes with the TV on in the background while I was doing something else. And, yeah, I'm old enough this was first-run stuff in the 1960's and 70's.

I'm sure I've seen the bit the OP describes and my very first thought was "Oh yeah, that was on "Gunsmoke". I wouldn't bet the family fortune on it but that was my gut reaction. I've seen it too though. Everyone thinks the Indian is trying to drown the woman in the horse-trough but he's doing it to break her fever.

Damn, I STILL think that was "Gunsmoke". Now it's bugging ME though.

Now that you mention Gunsmoke, I think you are right. I seem to remember Festus helping this old Indian who had been tossed out of his tribe, or left for dead maybe. I'd search TV.com, but Gunsmoke was on for what, 50 years? :)
