So, I am pretty tired right now cause it's late and I have been doing school work for a while. Well, when I went to save a document and I think I accidently saved it over another word document I had...and realized I forgot to change the file name. I was wondering if there is any way I can retrieve this Word document. It's not in the Recycle Bin and not in temporary files. Any ideas or am I at a total loss?

Well, it's probably lost now, but MAYBE, just maybe, you can find it in the folder where Word's AutoRecover feature saves files. You can find the location on your computer by (this is for Word 2007) clicking on the circle in the upper left, then Word options, then Save, and there you have "AutoRecover file location" (which should be something like: C:\Documents and Settings\YourComputerName\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\), then you go there and take a look. But if you've been opening new documents since the accident, it probably won't work. It's worth a shot.

Unfortunately, all is lost. Looks like I'm going to up late tonight.

Thanks anyways. Hopefully it won't ever happen again, but I'll remember what you said if there is ever a next time.

I haven't used WORD in forever... but Google Docs has an option to view the document's revision history. Does WORD not have something like that?

Unfortunately, most often, the only way you can not recover an accidentally deleted file is when you've saved over it.

Like others said, if there's an automatic back-up location, there might be a version left.

Did you shut down Word? If not, you may be very, very lucky - try Ctrl-Z, this will undo all changes. An remember, search for .TMP files.

This 'might' work, try typing in a sentence or a few words that you know are in the document. For example if you typed something like "generally most species do not", the type the exact same thing in the search function of the start menu.

You guys realize this thread was started on August 5? The topic isn’t very current. The document has been redone a long time ago I presume.

It's a spambot. It allready did this earlier in this very thread. Silly spambot. It just blew it's cover. The first time nobody noticed it had only one post.
