Playstation 4 and Netflix

I cant believe that you need the Playstation Network to work in order to watch Netflix on the PS4.

My wifi is working perfectly but I cant watch Netflix because the Playstation Network is down. What a joke! I swear Netflix still works on my PS3.
They're so obsessed with intergrating everything in to everything else that if one dominoe falls the rest come crashing down and make my PS4 next to useless.

Are Sony really this out of touch? Its bad enough that I have to pay for many online games and its bad enough that they got rid of backwards compatibility but I should be able to watch Netflix if my damn wifi is working. Its basic! Come on, Sony!

I can definitely understand your frustration, it's a good example of a level of integration that is of basically zero benefit to the user.

On the other hand, it also illustrates pretty well how much we've come to rely on certain online services to just work in our lives. (Much like we've come to rely on power or tap water to just work.)

The recent DNS DDoS really drove that home for me, the wife and I meant to sit down and play some Until Dawn (fresh install) for the first time but couldn't, since PSN was down and couldn't verify the digital purchase.

I thought digital purchases were no big deal before but now I really dont trust them with that kind of stuff.

I'm still happy with the convenience aspect of it, happy enough to live with the inherent trade-offs. But yeah, uninterrupted service has pretty much become a commodity like power and tap water, depending on where you live of course.

Its just unnessessary. I get if the PSN is down then I cant play my games online but why make Netflix vunerable?
Useless.

I doubt the intention was to make Netflix "vulnerable," just sounds like lazy or thoughtless programming. There's no technical reason other online features (such as Netflix) should be unavailable just because PSN is down, but it was probably coded in such a way that "PSN is down" is assumed to mean "the Internet is inaccessible" and all online features are just shut off.

(Just guessing, since I don't have a PS4 and can't test that.)
