if you could choose which would you have wanted as the first film? are you happy with Robert Wise's TMP/Vger being the first movie or do you wish theyd gone ahead with Philip Kaufmans POTT? (maybe abit eariiler in 1977/78 or maybe 79 as was..and then the sequels TWOK, TSFS etc - hopefully theyd remain as they were..even if POTT was more critically acclaimed)

Id loose no sleep over erasing TMP from the timeline and betting on POTT (maybe POTT would've ultimately been called TMP anyway). from the plot synopsis it just sounds a lot more interesting (abit like Prometheus?)than what we got. and Kaufman (Invasion of Body Snatchers 78, Right Stuff, Raiders) would've been an inspired choice as director

Going through a black hole to travel through time... sounds like more recent Trek. :techman:

As the title Planet of the Titans was only the treatment, and the film was officially Star Trek—The Motion Picture. you choices really ought to be Star Trek—The Motion Picture or Star Trek: The Motion Picture. :D

Though TMP isn't my favourite movie, I can see what they were aiming to do with it making a more cerebral sci-fi film in the face of the more actiony Star Wars. I'd need to re-read the POTT treatment again to remind myself of more of the specifics.

The POTT treatment isn't close to the film we'd have gotten because the script was rejected by Paramount and Kaufmann was changing it into something quite different.

Is there anything out there that shows what it was evolving into?

Isn't a version of the POTT script running around the internet? I know we never got the promised novelization, even though there were listings and pictures on places like Amazon.

I would love to see the novel someday. I don't have the attention span to read a script and "get it".

I wasn't aware that there was supposed to be a POTT book. I knew there was one planned for "The God Thing," with the story to be expanded by Michael Jan Friedman. I really wish that had been published. :(

Considering the quality of The Joy Machine, we probably dodged a turd.

I think you're right on there, it most likely was The God Thing I was thinking about. So that's 2 novels I wish we had.
