Planes, Trains and Autombiles

Sort of a "Thanksgiving" classic in shallow pool of movies that includes, probably only damped at being a "family classic" or essential by the profanity-filled rant at the auto rental counter (which is a great little scene) but just overall a fun movie and you can't go wrong with Steve Martin and John Candy.

Seeing something of a "surge" of support from people with a "release the Hughs Cut" hashtag going around as there's a number of filmed, but removed, scenes that'd add a little bit more the story, put some more antics in the adventure and fill in some minor plot holes and head scratchers.

What's every one else's feelings on this movie?

As long as they don't promote it as the "Hughes Cut", I'd be okay with it. Not sure if I actually want an extended version of the movie, or rather watch the cut scenes seperately. But I definitely think they should not promote an edit done over a decade after his death suggesting it's the version Hughes would have wanted.

I remember enjoying the film when it was released and renting it on VHS and I have it on DVD but I've not seen it for so long I can't remember any scene from it or even the storyline. Earlier I was debating on Uncle Buck, Brewster's Millions or Three Amigos and decided on Three Amigos. I'll dig out the Planes Trains And Automobiles DVD.

Yeah, and I think that without there being a John Hughes anymore we're unlikely to see any longer edit (Though one could argue the two hour cut of the movie could be a "Hughes Cut" before the studio made him take out another 30 minutes.) it'd be hard to do without the director of the movie around to put such a thing together.

I always liked the extended airplane sequences in the TV edit and think the movie "needs" them as it's sort of more of just showing the problems and misery of air-travel which gets a pretty short section of the movie. (Not as short as "trains" where apparently the only possible problem with train travel is that if the train breaks down you're possibly stranded in the middle of nowhere having to walk a mile to a highway to meet a bus.)

Gotta say, I'm glad there isn't an infidelity subplot.

Yeah that's one part cut out that I think most needed to be removed, Neil didn't need those accusations which would come out of the blue, really. I mean, if he was cheating on you would he really call you at home and tell you that he's not coming back and that he's with another person?! I never understood her line where she says, "I don't see what a snowstorm in Chicago has to do with you being in Wichita." I mean... They closed the airports, put it together!

Wichita is not remotely on the way to Chicago, it's completely in the other direction. So I assume that even with the snow, she's mildly incredulous that he's so far off course.

Just a great movie period.

Because of Edie McClurg, of course.

(fun fact: even after all these years, she STILL has people coming up to her on the street and asking her to tell them they're fucked. :guffaw: )

It is such a great movie from two of my favorite comedians.

Next to Chevy Chases' profanity laced rant in Christmas Vacation Martins' rant including his face is just so brilliant, especially the reply by the woman at the end that puts the cherry on top of the scene :guffaw::guffaw:

It is so great because everyone was in a similar situation like this and would have loved to let loose like this ( and some do).

Hopefully any new release with the extra scenes will have both theatrical and extended versions on the disc. That would satisfy everyone. I'll definitely be looking out for the blu-ray.

I saw PT&A at Christmas 2019 for the first time in 30 years or so and it holds up so well. Candy and Martin were never better; Candy’s premature death was such a loss to cinema audiences.

On the strength of it, my wife and I bought tickets to see Martin with Martin Short in our local arena for March but sadly it was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Yes. I'd loved to see John Candy play Katz in the Walk in the Woods movie. He would have been perfect for it.

To me, I've always found it a strange movie to watch as it's a movie so focused on a specific American holiday. Seeing as Canadian Thanksgiving is set in October while American Thanksgiving is in November, as such I haven't related to it much.

Planes, Trains, and Automovbiles is about Thanksgiving like Die Hard is about Christmas

It's the greatest Christmas movie eveh!!!

Thanksgiving is just the impetuous for the road trip. The trip is the point. Besides, is there that much difference between Canadian October and American November? This Canadian enjoys it no problem.

Thanksgiving isn’t a thing on this side of the Atlantic but everyone I know who’s seen it loves it. Everyone identifies with the issue of wanting to get home to your loved ones for a holiday and with the mismatched couple concept.
