The Dutch tourism board says 61 of the victims of a plane crash in Libya were from the Netherlands — more than half of those on board.

The Royal Dutch Tourism Board ANWB released the figure on its website. One Dutch child survived Wednesday's crash near Tripoli, the organization said. It did not give his age or condition.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — A Libyan Afriqiyah Airways plane crashed Wednesday on approach to Tripoli's airport, killing at least 96 people, the transport minister said. A 10-year-old Dutch boy was the only known survivor.

The airline said the Airbus A330-200 arriving from Johannesburg, South Africa was carrying 104 people — 93 passengers and 11 crew. The fate of the other 7 passengers was not immediately known.

Libyan state television showed a large field scattered with small and large pieces of plane debris and dozens of police and rescue workers with surgical masks and gloves, some of them carrying at least one body away. They gathered small personal items such as wallets and cell phones from the wreckage.
Big news here obviously.

I've heard so many theories as to why it crashed, looking forward to some hard facts.

An anchor on FOX News says one of the passengers Twittered something wrong with an engine, and the pilot called to have ambulances on the runway. Appearently everybody knew they were fucked. Sad part is, they probably thought there might have been a chance. That poor kid.

The news went on to also recap a story from a few decades ago here in the U.S.A. where a plane crashed and killed everybody onboard except one kid.

I've heard theories that it may have been related to the volcanic ash, but, just a theory, I await the facts.

Yeah that's complete bullshit so the "news" people get your attention. If it was landing then it would have been under the ash and there would be no issue.

Yep and his brother...

The Dutch Foreign Ministry said the boy had told an embassy official his name is Ruben, he is 9 years old and he is from the southern city of Tilburg in the Netherlands.

A Dutch newspaper quoted a woman who appeared to be the boy's grandmother as saying he had been in South Africa on safari with his brother and parents, who were celebrating their wedding anniversary.
Officials at al-Khadra hospital said three Westerners visiting the boy Thursday were his relatives. The Dutch Foreign Ministry said the boy's aunt and uncle were in Tripoli. The hospital officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.

Libyan television showed images on Wednesday of the boy laying on a hospital bed after the crash, breathing through an oxygen mask with his head bandaged and face bruised and swollen.

This Airbus crash was the same model as the one that crashed in the Atlantic a few months back.

No way in hell will I fly an Airbus when I go to Europe next year. This reminds me of the old DC-10's from the 1970's that seemed to be crashing left and right.

Was it Northwest Flight 255? I remember that one. One tiny little girl survived out of 156 on the plane. :(

Can't imagine being the sole survivor of a disaster like that.
IIRC, that was the one where the child was found under her mother who shielded her with her body.

then you're showing nothing but pig ignorance and ignoring the fact the DC-10s did have a design flaws which played a major roll it's repuation. The A330 has no indication of such flaws.

I suggest you take a look at the aviation herld and then you'll see just how much incidence take place involving all makes of aircraft that you never here about.

Then go the wikipedia and look up the various aircraft models and the details for the number of hull loss accdients. For starters since the A330 entered service in 1994 there have been 3 hull loss accidents.

From there go on look at the engines of which there are 3 makers Rolls Royce, Pratt & Whitney and GE and you'll find them on both Boeing and Airbus aircraft.

Wanna make something of the fact that Airbus use fly-by-wire? Then don't get on the Boeing 777 - it's FBW and basically the same system that will be used in the 787.

Some other figures
Boeing 747 - 123 incidents inc 48 hull loss accidents
Boeing 734 - 295 incdents inc 144 hull loss accidents
McDonnell Douglas - DC10 - 55 incidents inc 30 hull loss accidents.

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Two unexplained crashed, the second of which one of the Black Box recorders was bent. Next, you'll be saying that driving an era Ford Pinto or a newer Toyota is no cause for concern -- but hey! What the hell do I know?

only if one is stupid and wishes to live with their head shoved up their arsehole.

That actually didn't happen. The mother's body was several feet away. Little Cecelia's seat was thrown away from other passengers- her seat somehow shielded her.

And if one wants a Warning, one will continue in this vein. Otherwise one will be civil or remain silent.

and if one was being general in his comments at people with chicken little complexes and not understanding things but falling for the media hype and mis-information rather than directing it a particular poster?
